So I have no clue how this process works. I heard that the Ivy League runs their admissions differently, but I don't know how. Does anyone know how this work? Does it come down to one person? five?

From what I know the reader for your region will make an initial yes/no/maybe decision...then the maybe group will go before the admissions committee, your reader will present you to the rest of the committee, and they'll spend about a minute making a final decision...

so only the "maybe" kids go to committee?

which is most people

They have a lottery. Asians get one ticket, Whites get two, URMs get 5.

silly Duck :P

HAHA people still call u DUCK!

Anyhoo read this... http://csmonitor.com/cgi-bin/durableRedirect.pl?/durable/1998/12/15/fp11s1-csm.shtml

maybe it's like this?

Just call and ask they wont kill if u want to know

Did Columbia ever release #s of how many kids from each state were accepted from previous yrs?

What exactly is a URM?

under represented minority

gl0ry: yeah, that's what I want to know too.

they only gave out the names of the top states represented, but no comprehensive stats on students vs. states

...does it hurt to be from a nyc suburb? ah rhetorical question

in fact... looking from the cc archives .. most people on there that got in last year were from nyc and around....

it is harder to get in from NYC suburbs. More admitted students may be from NY/NJ/CT than any other state, but those three states hold more rejectees than any other state as well.

I've been hearing some conflicting things... Does the admissions rep person from your area read your application, then put it in a YES, NO, or MAYBE file? Yes is accepted, no is rejected, and maybe is brought before like the whole committee? Or is it more complex than that, with several more tiers of reading?

that article from the christian science monitor is from 1998, i think its not like that anymore.

"Or is it more complex than that, with several more tiers of reading?"

well i sure hope it's more complicated than a simple yes, no or maybe from one person..

does ANYONE have ANY idea how it's done exactly?
can i call columbia to ask them the EXACT procedure..
i'm really peeved that we're in the dark about this whole admissions process..
