The All-In-One Chance Thread (aka everyone who want to be "chanced" post here)

cdz512: How do you know that artistic/music supplements are helpful? from what I’ve heard they have almost no weight at all.

It depends on how good you are. Most people send in the instrumental ones and the art ones from what I have heard. The representatives said that they will help your application if they are exceptional (if you are just average and don’t have much of a talent, then sending it in won’t really help). Also they have to see that you have been committed to the subject that you want to send in a sample for (like if you want to send in an instrument one, they want to see that you have been playing that instrument for a long time and have put commitment to it). If they don’t see that you have been committed to it, like only started one or two years into high school and haven’t really won any awards or been any leader in your section, then it isn’t really useful. Essentially it helps if you have won art awards or have been a section leader in a good youth orchestra. If you are not really exceptional and you send it in, then it won’t help. Like if you play for a really good youth orchestra and you have been playing for a long time, then it will help (given that you are really good at it). And that goes for art too. But if you are just average with nothing really special about your art, then no it won’t help. From what I have seen, it is helpful. I have seen a couple people this year who are really exceptional in art (they have won gold keys in scholastic art award or have been sectional leader in youth orchestra) and they have gotten into Duke (note they weren’t like the best in my school, some had around a 3.8 GPA (and they weren’t the best in their graduating class really). One had around a 3.8 GPA and was international too). So from what I have seen and have been told the artistic supplement helps (for people who are exceptional in art that is).

Of course they help, if you’re good. Private schools are always looking to fill spots of graduated seniors in their band, in their art department, etcetc. It’s like athletic recruitment.

Does anyone know if Duke…or any school, would look down on guitar artistic supplements? I’m including a folk song, a jazzy but impressive piece (Europa), and a classical thing I composed. I’m hoping this is traditional enough but if they just plain don’t respect my instrument then I’m screwed, even though I’ve been classically trained and know what I’m doing :(

Moxess: Anytime you consider sending in supplemental material, read the school’s guidelines very very carefully. Some school strongly discourage any supplemental material at all, while others encourage it. If you can’t find the information online, be safe and call the school and ask if supplemental material is allowed.

As far as guitar supplements, I don’t think your choice of instrument would hurt you chances, provided that the school allows the supplement to begin with.

Duke has their own artistic supplement, so I’m pretty sure they encourage it. and thank you  I hope you’re right

Chie: Duke does have it’s own artistic supplementary material (hence why we were discussing it). But yes, some school don’t want them.

Moxess: As for guitar, I don’t know if they look down upon it. I think they won’t look down upon it if you are good. However, I would recommend not playing anything like rock and things that they play on the radio. I think folk, jazzy and classical is good. I also would recommend acoustic guitar because electric guitar is just too noisy and difficult to understand which cord is played. I don’t think they look down at it at all.

Can I overcome my ECs for Pratt ED?
Thanks!

You have a good chance. You have decent ECs, and good test scores and GPA . Yes EDs will help but it won’t really overcome your ECs. Your ECs aren’t so bad I have to say. They are decent. But yes apply ED and you have a good chance.

I’m applying ED as a legacy…

Honestly, you don’t have to retake the ACT, 33 is good (unless you feel that one of your scores is too low, then I understand). Your GPA and ranking are great. You have some nice community service, but not a lot. I would say that your ECs are a little bit weak but your test score is great. Apply ED and you have a great chance.
