My school (IB School) has the most annoying limit on the total number of HL courses that you can take. (4 total) Even though I love the liberal-artsy-ness of the IB program, I can't help but think that I would've been much better off taking AP courses (this would allow for so many more challenging courses, as well as college credit.)

Will colleges look unfavorably upon my sad list of 4 HL courses? (The rest are SL.) Will they favor AP students over me because of this limit?

i believe you need to explain it the college. I don't know about IBs so i can't comment on your schedule. APs aren't great esp. the liberal arts section. the LA parts are APUS, APWH, AP gov, AP EH, AP eng Lang, AP eng Lit compared to the abundant IB course you have they're nothing. I personally wish we had IB here, then I could take like 20th century Philosophy.

ALL Schools Limit it's part of the programme
fyi: HL Courses are TWO years (required)...it would be impossible to take all six areas for two years...just take AP's to supplement navyblue, nothing sad about it :)

IB only lets you take 4 HL courses (you must take 3, no more than 4) for the final IB exam. Maybe this is why they limit the number of courses.
Colleges will not look down on this....IB diploma is sort of like a
package
. If you do it, then its the most rigorous courseload.

No college will look down on you for having only 4HLs... normal IB students are supposed to have 3. Besides, it is probably impossible to do well (as in get 6/7 on all your exams) in 5/6 HLs and have a life unless you are freaking brilliant. My school up until this year only offered 3 HLs anyways (we have European History, English, and Chem - they added Math HL this year), and we have kids on full scholarships to Queen's, McGill, UBC and a couple who got into Harvard, Yale, etc. No worries... if you take the IB, they like it.

hehe ONLY 4 HLs? frankly you need to realize how much work IB is, no university is going to look down at you for having "only" 4 HLs. Also that is not your school's limit, that is the IBO's limit. Some schools allows students to take more HLs as certificate courses outside the regular 7 IB classes but very few students choose to. do realize that in the second year you are going to be doing most of your EA/IA/EE with other IB requirements as well as preparing for the exams, 4 HL is not easy, and especially not easy to manage.

as for the famous IB/AP comparison, I really dont see the point in comparing those 2, they are totally different things that serves different purposes, AP are individual classes that grants university credits and shows the rigor of your courseload while IB is a diploma program that are mostly like regular clases only more intensive. HL classes grants you credits on if you do really well on them but the purpose of IB is totally different from that of AP.
anyways 4 HLs'll serve you fine in terms of admission.
