The AP Language and Composition Thread

Hello!
This is just a thread for people taking AP Lang to get together. What are you guys doing in class right now? We're starting a unit on rhetoric.

Well, we had to read Into the Wild over the summer and write a paper on it, and now we’re reading Walden and will then write a comparative essay on the two. We’re also doing rhetoric at too.

We are writing our junior research paper right now, so we are focusing greatly on the research process as well as rhetoric. We had to read three books over the summer, so I’m assuming she’ll assign us an essay soon enough.

I really love my teacher so far! She’s very nice and helpful.

Fun fact: Ap English doesn’t really teach you to write well. It will teach you how to critique other peoples’ writing with formulaic 5 paragraph essays

Timed writes. Ugh… no. Just no.

We analyzed the speech President Bush gave on 9/11. We also analyzed President Obama’s speech about Syria. It was really interesting.

It’s been the fourth day of school and we’ve only written down vocabulary words and getting quizzes on them.

Now serving word #: 52.

We wrote an essay on Walden, and corrections for that are due sometime next week. So far, we’ve analyzed “The American Scholar”, “On Civil Disobedience”, and “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” which we’re going to continue next week. Only one timed writing so far, and we just started the pathos, ethos, logos stuff.

Today we started analyzing the Declaration of Independence!

We’re learning about logos, pathos, and ethos as well. We also read The Black Hole of Calcutta. THAT was an interesting essay to read…

AP English Language is one thing and one thing only - rhetoric, or rather, the ability to acutely critique rhetoric. Overall an easy course.

Was the AP exam hard?

We had our first quiz and essays last week (they were on the summer reading). I don’t think anyone in our class got over 90.
My teacher is evil. She has a bad reputation for being cruel when grading papers.
But I really love English and I’m a good writer.

@belllander last year I wrote an essay on Walden- I hope we’ll study it again this year so I can just copy-paste.

@AnImpAffliction - No. The exam was really, really easy. Our teacher prepared us though by compiling the most difficult multiple choice questions and essay prompts from the past thirty years so when we took the actual exam, we wouldn’t feel intimidated since we already tackled the worst CollegeBoard has ever come up with. I got a 5. Most kids in my class who put in moderate effort got a 5.

Wow. Maybe I will be just as lucky.

Wrote my first analytical essay today. Pretty sure I nailed it

Whoop, whoop! Congrats!
