The "Appeal" Box

i think it'd be fun to hear the various things Rice applicants placed in the "fill the box to the right with something that appeals to you" section of the app.

oh, and include your intended major. maybe there's a correlation...

I put a picture of my dog swimmng in the pool, and put the caption "A relaxing afternoon at the pool with my dog, Jenny" underneath it. I'm applying as an econ major (school of social sciences).

lindsey, when i told S about your book, he said," wow, that is neat". we wii pass by your town this summer when we visit yellow stone.

:) You'll love it. We actually decided to move here after visiting Yellowstone when I was 9 months old. If possible, try to spend some time in the town. It's really very charming. I'm certain you'll have a great time.

I saw your stats. You will get in almost anywhere you have applied. I thought you applied to Stanford too.

Thanks for your confidence! I truly appreciate it.

Primarily, I want to attend school in the Northeast, especially New England. There are a few exceptions (like Rice). My dad lives near Dallas and would love for me to be close by. The only California school I applied to was Scripps because they offered me a very nice scholarship.

We'll see what happens. I'm just anxious to find out where I'm going to end up and to be able to start identifying myself with a specific school.

Life in Houston will be very different than life un WY or NE, but Rice campus and life are very nice. We live in Houston.

I visited the campus probably two years ago with my dad. It was my first campus visit and I was enamored by the campus and the school. I thought the campus was absolutely lovely. However, we didn't spend any time checking out the area around campus. Could you tell me about it? Around other campuses, I noticed a lot of bookstores, cafes, and restaurants. Is this the same with Rice? Is there any public transportation to speak of in Houston? How do you like living in Houston? Do you think its a nice city for college students?

Thanks!

yes we like it in Houston. We like hot weather. Anything less than 75 F is winter for us. Rice is walking distance from the medical center and few museums, zoo, a golf course, park and an out-door theater (good free programs). This year they started a light rail with a stop at Rice to downtown theater district and many nice pigout places.

The neaches are about 40 miles away, but they are OK. The water is not clear. It is flat. we have to drive 1,000 miles to colorado to see mountains. It rains a lot. It is December and I can still go out in shorts.

The campus is surrounded by nice expensive homes. The Rice village is pretty good for students to go out. From what I have heard, the kids want to live in dorm. The Freshmen, Juniors and Seniors have priority. There is a lottery for sophmores - they don't like it if they have to move out. It seems Kids like to stay within campus boundaries.

And they claim that they have a tree for every undergraduate on the campus - we already have named a tree for S.

I just visited a few weeks ago and was very impressed with both the campus (the amount of trees was stunning and beautiful) and the surrounding city. No offense intended, but I would say that Houston, as a whole, isn't a nice city, but Rice is in one of the nicest areas I've seen of it. It is surrounded by the nice homes and neighborhoods, parks, and plenty of resturant/shopping/entertainment venues to keep students happy. I would also agree, based off of stories from my friends, that students like being in the college housing, enough to keep the majority of them on campus all four years.

No offense taken, yes Houston is one of the ugliest cities with fattest people on this universe. But we are talking about Rice and surrounding areas.

^^ haha. I drew a mobile with about five objects balanced. This pretty much represents my life.

Thanks for the info, Simba. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

The system Simba described re housing is true for some of the residential colleges but not others. Each has its own system. At some, you're vulnerable to losing your place on campus during your junior year; at others, it's your senior year.
