The Application is Missing a Big Part of Me

I'm having some second thoughts about my applications. I'm worried that my application (including my essays) don't convey my personal passion to study education and public policy. Almost all of my extra curriculars center around this goal but I don't know how well that is conveyed. For example, when I worked for the Lieutenant Governor of Delaware, I was given the opportunity to work on awarding schools the Models of Excellence in Education award. In one of the summer classes I took, Writing Analysis and Persuasion, I observed the New School and analyzed the effectiveness of their alternative education model. I just feel like I'm missing all of these little pieces in my application. I wrote a new common app essay today about how tutoring at a middle school for underpriviledged girls ignited my desire to initiate education reform, but I don't really think it conveys my voice as well as my original essay (reflecting on life through the lens of childhood). How do you think I should incorporate this really big part of my life into my applications?

Have you thought about sending a resume? The resume or activity summary can list many of the activities that you have mentioned in much greater detail than can appear on the application. You could title your list “Education Activities” and list and describe those things that you did that you want to highlight. Students who are into the arts often feel the need to send additional summaries to show all the different things that they have done. The same can be true for students who are heavily involved in athletics. If this is your passion, don’t be afraid to offer additional information demonstrating that.

I agree with Shennie. Use the Additional Information section to upload a document that presents this story. A resume is one option. Another possibility is an additional short essay that ties these experiences together and describes your goals. Choose whatever format appeals to you that is easily and quickly readable.

Thanks so much! You guys are so helpful. You don’t think colleges would be annoyed by this additional info?

This is the whole purpose of the additional information section; to provide information that is important to the admissions decision and doesn’t come through in other places on the app. It is certainly not an annoyance. Keep it brief and make it easy to read.
