The application process - Legit ???

I was advised from a reliable source, that the UF application
process follows the following time frame in order to obtain a
2012 freshman class:

UF will process approximately 33,000 freshman applicants
and during the first two weeks of January, approximately
3,000 will be screened-out and immediately eliminated for
incomplete application such as high school / standardized
test not submitted or fees not paid ( bounced payments ) ,
or very poor scores ( GPA below 2.7 / SAT below 1500) etc.

During the middle of January with 30,000 applicants remaining,
approximately 1/3 of the applicants are placed into a pending file for primarily low stats, GPA ( below a 3.2 ) low SAT ( below a 1610 ) or
a low ACT ( below a 23 ) and a poor "holistic review".

The remaining 20,000 applicants during the end of January are then placed into three different sections based primarily on stats and those "holistic qualities".

Top 25 % = 5,000 applicants middle 50 % = 10,000 applicants
and bottom 25 % = 5,000.
During the first week of February, the top tier will have 4,000 accepted, middle tier will be offered 6,000 acceptances, the bottom tier will have 600 accepted and those previously pending will be offered the
600 remaining spots. UF will then notify approimately 11,200
students and approximately 6200 will eventually attend.

Does this sound legit ?

I know they have an honors class for those interested in reading the application essays. Not too sure how the process really works.

it sounds fishy that they would reject 20 percent of the “top quartile” of candidates

I do not know if the evaluation process works as you describe. However some of the numbers are off. You are correct there will be about 33,000 applications. Because of over enrollment last year, (class of 6,500 for 2011) there are targeting a class size of 6,300. If that is the target figure then the admitted class should be about 11,000 covering Fall, Summer B and Spring. However, your analysis does not take into account two groups that will come out of the 11,000 admitted students. First, recruited athletes with scholarship offers will be offered places in the class and they may have stats below the normal competitive threshold. Secondly, there is a program called the “Talented Twenty”
where the top few students with highest GPA’s in each public high school are nominated by the school principal. While these students would very likely have the high grades they need to only meet the minimum requirements for SAT or ACT score. The students selected are not all guaranteed a place in UF but in one of the state’s 4 year universities. It has been estimated that the number of students admitted to UF for this program is 500-600. Thus between athletes and Talented Twenty you would have close to a 1000 slots absorbed. Thus with 33,000 applications and 11,000 admits the admission rate is 33%. Also generally, but not always the highest rate students are admitted for Fall, then Summer B and then Spring.
