the ART scene at STANFORD?

how are the arts at stanford?
i know this is random, but i'm in love with visual arts. i'm almost certain that i want to go into art/design career wise, but i personally cannot give up on a university environment.

i have excelled throughought school especially in history/political science, etc. like i love to learn, and honestly i really want a strong liberal arts environment, despite the fact that i know i want to be an artist.

so i loved stanford when i visited, but i'm nervous that my art needs won't be catered to there.

can anyone help to specify on this?

and does anyone know any other good top schools with strong art programs?
i've already done the whole us news world report list.

its looking like yale is the best, but i just love stanford.

me too! yale has the best program out of the top schools, but i just love stanford... decisions :</p>

YouTube - Arts at Stanford: The Big Picture

Stanford has a real emphasis on creativity and the arts. In fact, it's a big part of the $4.3 billion campaign called the Stanford Challenge:

[quote]
It seeks $1.175 billion for initiatives to improve K-12 education, strengthen Stanford’s undergraduate programs, reinvent and enhance graduate programs and engage all students in the arts and the creative process through exhibitions, performances and research.

The Stanford Challenge: Stanford University Facts

One big goal is to strengthen Stanford Institute for Creativity and Arts (SICA).

[quote]
The Stanford Institute for Creativity and the Arts is the hub of the Arts Initiative at Stanford, a key priority in The Stanford Challenge. In addition to strengthening core arts departments and further integrating the arts in undergraduate life, the initiative expands arts activity within and beyond Stanford. It brings together faculty and students from departments all across campus to collaborate on innovative performances and exhibitions. The initiative will improve and expand Stanford arts facilities while forging ongoing partnerships with theaters, museums and other prominent arts organizations.

Stanford University Arts Initiative

It grants tons of money each year for art endeavors--any kind you can think of. There are also plenty of arts-related jobs (work-study and so on) and internships. It offers quite a few arts degrees. There are tons of arts organizations. And of course there's the Cantor Arts Center.

Here's the full page on Creativity & the Arts, from the Undergraduate Academic Life (UAL) site:

UAL - Creativity & the Arts

If you get in, Stanford will send you a nice folder with info on its arts scene as well as a DVD showing you exactly what it's like (I believe this is the Arts Guide that the UAL page is talking about). You might be able to request a copy of it before, though.

Seriously, Stanford emphasizes a creative approach to education, in all its forms (from the classroom to research to the arts), as sort of a complementary theme to interdisciplinary study. There's really no better place to be for the arts than Stanford right now.

Also, you mention that you want a strong liberal arts environment. Part of the intellectual core at Stanford is the required, though flexible, set of courses, including three Introduction to the Humanities (IHUM) courses, three writing and rhetoric courses, two "education for citizenship" courses, five disciplinary breadth courses, and foreign language courses. This core is comparable to those at the University of Chicago and Columbia University, though Stanford's is much more flexible and really does help to set an intellectual undercurrent in the environment.

Thank you for those posts.
They make me want to go to Stanford even more :)

My perspective as a current Stanford undergrad is that the arts scene here is not very strong at all. You can't get into most art classes unless you're a declared art major, and overall, programs involving the arts seem to lack student interest. If you're absolutely certain that you want to go into art or design as a career, I would not recommend Stanford. Schools on the east coast such as Yale would probably be better-suited to your needs. For more information on the "arts deficiency" at Stanford, see this article from the Daily: This Stanford Life: Stanford Arts Deficiency - The Stanford Daily Online

^^ obviously, I highly disagree (I think Stanford is perfect for arts people), but I'll add that Stanford is changing much of what you have said.

That's an opinion article, by the way. To the OP, know that others have a different opinion. You can see a rebuttal of that article in the comments.
