The Arts at JHU

I was recently accepted to Johns Hopkins University and am very interested in the university. I know that it is very esteemed as far as the sciences, but I was wondering how are the arts at JHU, since many of my interests revolve around that area. I have heard that their creative writing program (Writing Seminars Major) is every prestigious. I am also interested in film studies as well as possibly continuing my theatre involvement. Any insight would be a great help.

John Astin is head of the theater program. Enough said :)

Lots of theater:
Barnstormers, Witness theater (student written, directed plays), JHU theater etc.
Comedy performance groups include Buttered Niblets (improv) and Throat Culture (sketch comedy). Lots of Throat Culture stuff is up on youtube. Grad programs in poetry/fiction ranked as top 5 most competitive in the US by Atlantic Monthly.

There’s a ton of theatre here- the Buttered Niblets (improv) made it to nationals this year, which is kind of awesome. I took a class here on film and it was super interesting (but it was only a two week class so take that with a mild grain of salt.) the acappella groups are pretty big here- at least one makes it to semifinals, if not finals, of ICCAs every year.

there’s also the freshman one acts, which are a great way for freshmen to get into theatre without being intimidated by the veterans.

As @BlueJayBJ said, John Astin (from Addams Family) is a professor here. He teaches a class that is open to anyone, called Contemporary Theatre and Film, which I definitely recommend taking. He tells stories about his time in the business and it is really interesting! He is also such a sweet guy and loves talking to and getting to know students.

My cousin went there on an information session and tour this week. She is interested in sciences, but has done a lot of musical theatre and vocal performance during high school. When she asked about taking music classes at JHU while pursuing the sciences, maybe even minoring in music, the admissions intern who ran the session said that all music courses are in Peabody Conservatory, and she would have to apply for the joint degree to be able take part in them. I was surprised, but that is what they said. The JHU website indicates that the music classes are in Peabody, I was just surprised they aren’t opened to students in the main college(s). Good luck!

fredoliver, that is completely wrong. I actually take lessons at Peabody although I am a Homewood student. They definitely allow it. Have her e-mail the actual Peabody teachers since they are the ones, not the school, that will decide if they have time to give her lessons.

Hey,
So I am an International Studies and Film Studies double major at Hopkins.
Contrary to popular belief, the Film Department, albeit small, offers a variety of opportunities here at Hopkins: a diverse selection of classes on Film production, film theory, screenwriting and directing. So far I have taken Intro to Cinema 1 last semester and Intro to Digital film this semester, and loved both. The instructors are extremely passionate and ready to help you learn/get excited about the subject in depth. Next semester I am taking Intro to Film Production (16mm), which is amazing according to some other film students I’ve spoken to.

You can also take classes at Mica (Maryland Institute College of the Arts), and there are classes where Hopkins students and Mica students work together as well (i.e. Narrative Productions). The film department also gives you the opportunity to do research, find interships, jobs etc…

The instructors are also role models and extremely expiring ( one of them, Matthew Porterfield, just screened his latest indie film at Sundance )

Some people don’t know these things about Hopkins, but, what I always say, if you look for things, you find them
