I can't find the earlier thread that posed similar concerns, so I'll start a new one. I am concerned about the arts at Middlebury. Is there a vibrant music scene? are the art classes full? I keep hearing about languages and science at Midd, but are there many people majoring in art and music? And how strong are these 2 departments?

Modadunn thanks very much for finding the thread. Any newer views, anyone? Are any of the Freshman Seminars art/music oriented?

There is a J term devoted to a Midd/Community theater production…

The 40 freshman seminars last fall included: Mozart operas; The world of the italian renaissance artist; Birth of the Cool: American Culture at Mid-Century; and Experiments in sound (the science of music) as well as a few film-oriented choices.

I haven’t responded to this thread thinking someone else would, but there’s a lot more to the arts at Middlebury than some J-term classes. Art is certainly one of the more popular majors. I think the art history focus is probably stronger than the studio focus however. You’ll notice that one of the largest facilities in the entire campus I’d the Mahaney Center for the Arts. I also know that every year Midd sends some students off to top graduate programs in art history.

Williams really is the benchmark for this (among all schools nationally) and since Midd sees Williams as a rival I know they try to remain very competitive in this area.
