The Asian Thread

I read this entire thread before commenting (don’t judge me)

YAAAY FELLOW ASIANS
I’m Chinese and I live in canada and I’m a… Sophomore?
I like KPOP too but I’m not into the new groups (my friends are going crazy over EXO I swear)

Anyway I was wondering whether or not I should switch high schools. IB vs. AP + French immersion.
Or rather, how good is the IB program?

My parents are pretty chill with me, but my dad did say “it would be abnormal if you didn’t get straight As” in a jokingly manner so… (It’s canada over 86% is an A)

And what should I do to prepare for university? My school has provided ZERO information as us grade 10s are panicking over our provincial exams (all grade 10s take the same exam for 3 subjects : math, English and science)

IF YOU READ THIS WOW

If you reply to this wow thank you for thinking I’m interesting

I hate Canada.

Can I just go to live in Canada now…?

@angespanges Are you planning on applying to any US universities, or just Canadian? (or another country?) Also, what’s your favorite kpop band? (If you were curious, I used to be really into Super Junior - hence the username haha - and SHINee, but now I don’t follow kpop as much anymore…)

I’m Asian but apparently should’ve born “black”… gosh i hate being asian when it comes to academics

Lets look at swiftyfan’s schedule
Sophomore
AP World
Hon Eng
AP Stats
AP Calc BC
Spanish 3
AP Bi
ur crappy grades might come from that difficult schedule.

yea, I’m Asian and…I’m totally stressed out!

Number of times yelled out per day: 10 or more. sad life.

hello fellow asians i am now one with my people

@angespanges, IB sure ain’t no picnic y’all. i’m doing 7 subjects (but one’s music and i play piano like i’m sure all good number of you guys do), and i’m really busy most days. but, it’s not impossible, and especially if you’re good at essays and projects and whatnot, the IB is a great program! if you’re just good at tests and you have clear weaknesses and strengths (like if you can’t physically do lit but you rock people’s socks off at math), then i’d stick with AP ya feel sorry it’s long if you read all of this i applaud you clapclap

but, yeah, as for me, i’m a junior in an IB school in the US. i’m canadian, though, so awk. i like lots of stuff, i dunno, yeah. bye y’all have fun with school and rice and pokemon yeah?

Do any of you have parents who, if you don’t seem eligible for Ivy League caliber schools, lecture that you’re going to be a worthless dying hobo? Mine do that. Essentially now I’m just going to be a hobo. Yup. Joy.

@quidditchcat Yep, that’s basically my situation right now. My (Asian) mom thinks I’m headed to community college b/c I didn’t get a 2350+ on my SAT and basically have no achievements to my name :(

Yay fellow IBers!! I admit I probably wouldn’t have stuck with it if my mom hadn’t made me, but I love the people in it even if some days are an absolute pain. For once I’m glad my mom gave me the push to do something lol.

I feel like the following is a feature that’s so inherently Asian it mist be part of our genetic code somehow: parents comparing us to other Asian kids. It’s always soooo annoying. Like my mom just today was all “why aren’t you more like so-and-so? She qualified for state swimming ever since freshman year, studies 5 hours every Saturday for the SAT etc. etc. etc.” Am I right in thinking this is a widespread Asian condition? :/

@Trecriture My mom used to do that. Then I got really mad/threw a fit/threatened our relationship, so she stopped. I know she still does it in her head, but she’s been a lot better about it. She doesn’t compare academics anymore, but just attitude, as in “so-and-so is so sweet all the time and never has a lemon face like you always do.” Which is more annoying in some ways, but I’m learning to change that about myself.

Yeah. My parents do that all the time. It’s like “this previously no name girl was a NMSF and you weren’t. What were you doing?” Or “That guy won twenty international competitions. I don’t care if he’s a dick, you should be besties with him”

There’s also stuff like “wow. That girl talks really well to adults. You should be just like her.” So not only in academics, but personality.

In addition to not having the best English, my parents couldn’t think of stuff to write about in a parent “brag sheet”. So I guess I see where they’re coming from.

mah nia mah nia

@Yakisoba (I hope that’s your name ><) I should have written British Columbia (the province I live in) not all of canada, whoops ><

Sorry for separating these into different posts… oops…

@elf4eva my favourite groups would be 2ne1, Big Bang & miss a ^^ I’m not sure which university I want to go to so I’m trying to figure out during winter break. My parents used to have big dreams for me and everything but they’ve pretty much given up so they aren’t pressuring me to go anywhere outside the local university here, which is UBC. I should probably pick myself up and start taking my education in my own hands haha…

@unlikely YAY FELLOW CANADIAN hugs if IB is more work based then test based… rubs chin hmm sounds like something I’d quite enjoy… thanks for the comparison ^^
(I won’t be going to IB though since I’d have to either drop French immersion and move schools or not drop it and go to another school in another city…)

AHH, just wait until all of you have kids and say the same things.

oh good lordy, kids. can any of you speak/read/write chinese? i know a lot of ABCs who can’t, so i was just wonderin’ y’all

@angespanges, omg french immersion pls help sos french i CAN’T DO IT.
