THE "AUDITION" the film

This Sunday(only) April 19. At participating theaters. "The Audition" a documentary on the Met auditions. go to Fathom Events

I won’t be able to see it! Is there any way it will be available like audio only online or somehow on the radio?

From what I understand it will be available “later” online and in DVD. Frequently these productions are bought and aired on cable channels such as Ovation.

Go figure my kids are in a 4 hour concert marathon as part of Orchestras Feeding America that day and exactly the time it’s showing locally. It would be great for them to see it even though they are not vocoalists.

We saw the story about the film in the paper this morning and will be taking our D to see it, even though the venues are out of our way. We want her to see what she’s signing up for.

BTW, I had the great pleasure of singing behind Michael Fabiano, one of the singers in this film, in a few holiday concert performances with Peter Nero and the Philly Pops in 2007. That boy got some game!

Wow! Thank you, thank you for putting the word out!

We love these Metropolitan Opera at the Movies things. Our little, tiny local movie theater 10 minutes away airs them. They tell us that the most attendees they’ve ever had at one is 5 people! It’s a shame. But, they’re really not well advertised - at least around here.

We’ll be there. Thanks again for the heads up!

We learned of this during the Opening Night at the Met HD broadcast and have had it marked down ever since. Bought our tickets a few weeks ago and are all set to go. Have you gone to the metopera.org site and seen the previews? Amazing!
BTW- the only showing will be at 3PM, an unsual time for the HD showings so make sure you have the proper time noted

For those of you who can not make the program(me included :frowning: )—i got the word that this has been sold to PBS for a fall air date.

Hey fellow Canucks - the showing up here in Canada is June 6.

Would any of you who get to see this report back? I’d love to hear about it. Thanks

Oh, that’s too bad, srw. You can’t go? Have you checked the website, and there are no theaters near you? Or maybe you’re just otherwise occupied. Well, I’ll try to remember to report back. But I’m no movie critic …

Simple, Ha! Maybe this is your big chance to learn a new skill! Seriously, I just wanted to know how informative it was and the general feel for the experience. I am sure I, just like many of us, dream of seeing our kids there someday! I would have loved to have gone, playing at lots of theaters in my area, just a complicated week end.

srw

Sorry to hear you can’t go as it would have given us a chance to meet up…I’m planning on going…it’s playing at the plaza…can’t get DH to go with me…so will have to sit alone

Now, add to the preparation needed to “make it” the singers need personal trainers. I remember very well reading one of the reviews of the 2007 Met auditions in which one of the reviewers mentioned that one of the female winners would have trouble landing roles as a lyric because of her “body type.” That was the first time I had remembered seeing that in a review of such young performers. The first thing two of my D’s friends were told when they started with their voice teachers at different schools was to get to the gym - one is a tenor and one a soprano. They lost the freshman 15 rather than gain it.

DH wasn’t going to go but since it was rainy out decided to go…Thought he would go for popcorn when he got bored…guess what…we never got the popcorn…he was as glued to the show as I was…

I wrote several things down … but need a few minutes to digest it all… and get a snack seeing that I didnn’t get the popcorn he had promised :)

Great film!!! It humanized the participants and the Met staff so much. The news about Ryan Smith at the end though, was like a kick in the gut. I really liked the man and loved his voice.

Is this the one with Alec Shraeder? I meant to put it on my calendar and somehow totally forgot…it was a crazy busy week and weekend!! Alec went to Oberlin and was very kind to my son, though he’s a bit older. I heard that this is supposed to be an awesome documentary.

Anyone know when its showing again on tv?

What a nice Sunday afternoon, and I would love to see it again. Yes, Don, the news about Ryan Smith came as a horrible shock, but it was good to know that he not only experienced his dream, but that others, such as Thomas Hampson and Susan Graham, thought so highly of his debut performance.
Was anyone else surprised that they selected 3 women as winners? Loved Amber, the heavier-voiced soprano and also the comic mezzo (chose a great piece to showcase herself!) but, even though the other young woman ended up making a spectacular debut at the last moment (was she the only cover the Met had? Maybe it’s time to go back to the days of multiple covers for roles…), I didn’t care for her performance as she slid flat near the end and just stayed there. Voice and physical-type wise she seems born 50 years too late as she would have been really at home in the days of Sutherland and the scary, dramatic visaged large-ladies of opera! Of course, I also have opinions about the other singers, but I’ll keep that to PM discussions!
In retrospect, it might have been better had they not shown the discussion in the judge’s room-only because I hate to think that anyone might have been hurt by comments- but I guess that was part of the point of it all.At least we know where they all went afterwards. It also would have been nice for us to have known what schools the competitors attended, but that might have created an admissions nightmare!
Have to say it though- can Renee get any thinner? She is looking emaciated- badly in need of a plate of pasta- but yet her jacket appeared as if it was 2 sizes too small. She is such a lovely and gracious woman, but I don’t like to see her looking haggard. Maybe the 3 of them will go out to dinner and EAT!

papagena- Yes! Do you know where Alec has gone for his grad studies? He is one to watch (my D never took her eyes off of him and had a big smile every time he performed!). The end credits said that he was “being courted by opera houses all over the world, but was continuing his studies”. Very smart move on his part.

BTW, Kiera Duffy was in the theater with us with about 15 friends and relatives.

Re: Alec Shraeder, my D (and Mrs. 9992, for that matter) kept gushing about how cute was. That boy can sure get it done vocally. He has a way with words, besides.
