How would you describe the average Stanford applicant, I just want to make sure I'm at least at par so next year if I decide to be REA it's not a waste. GPA, SAT, ect.

You can read a little here: [College Search - Stanford University - The Farm - SAT®, AP®, CLEP®](<a href=“College Search - BigFuture | College Board”>College Search - BigFuture | College Board)

^that is more of average people accepted, I’d imagine the average applicant has lower scores

From the Class of 2011 Stanford Preview, the 50th percentile applicant has:

GPA of 4.0 or higher
Top 10% of class (80% have this)
SAT CR 600-699
SAT M 700-799
SAT W 600-699 (barely, so approximately 700)
ACT Composite 30-36

This contrasts with the average admitted student:

GPA of 4.0 or higher
Top 10% of class (94% of class)
SAT CR 700-799
SAT M 700-799
SAT W 700-799
ACT Composite 30-36 (85% of class)

Well tbh what’s the point of looking at the scores of the average applicant when you have the data for the average admitted student? Surely you would want to be in the latter category?

It’s good to look at the average applicant too. If 50% of applicants do not have the scores or credentials to get into Stanford and you do have the scores, then that 7% chance to get accepted goes to 14%.

^It’s not all about your scores.

Yea, I really can’t believe 15% of the admitted class doesn’t even have a 30 on the ACT. Darn URM and recruited athletes :(

There are students at Stanford with 20-25 ACT scores.

@Rush10 I don’t know why you assume URMs and recruited athletes have lower than 30s. All of the people (INCLUDING URMs) from my high school have had over 30s. and don’t go and say they are outliers so you can stay right.

Scores aren’t everything, and everyone who gets into Stanford has some sort of “hook” to get them in. Its what makes the class great.

@Kudasai: So now you’re school is the standard for which all Stanford admits are based on? Well let’s see. In the last two years, my school has had admits with the following SATs:
1400
1750
2000
2200
2370

Please justify how an applicant with a 1400 (out of 2400) SAT got into Stanford without any hooks; I’m very curious to hear your reasoning.

Was that 1400 out of 2400 admitted student a recruited athlete? Was the applicant a URM? If not, what was his ethnicity?

We’re not privy to that information.

Are you sure it’s 1400 out of 2400? And, NOT the only 1600 scale?

Yes, Naviance specifies. It is DEFINITELY out of 2400. Out of 1400, they have a 900.

Was the applicant a REA admit or RD admit?

RD ten char

Would a major research project help a lot?

That kid definately had some really amazing thing that made up for his scores. Being a urm doesn’t help nearly as much as everyone thinks so its not that. Maybe he was a recruited athlete though

I feel like the 1400 out of 2400 was either a mistake, out of 1600, or a recruited athlete who scored a bit higher on the ACT. I just don’t see someone below average academically being recruited for Stanford, no matter who they are.
