the bad about Rice? (if any that is...)

I've heard tons of great stuff about Rice and though i haven't visited, I am very much inclined to choosing it over the rest of my schools. however, ^^ any idea what current students there generally gripe about? Are there any areas which Rice perhaps did not meet up to your expectations? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! :)

its expensive. thats about it

My daughter is very happy at Rice :)

It's not even that expensive for a private school (actually quite cheap). It gets very hot before mid-October and after March. It's also too small for some people's tastes. And the people there do embrace the stereotype of being just slightly off-kilter. (Beer Bike anyone?) Other than that, it's a pretty awesome school (and each of these things I listed may be complete positives for people other than me).

grad programs aren't that strong

Things students gripe about (I'm a sophomore):

Servery food
ORGO
Problem sets
Attractiveness/Availability of members of the prefered sex
Awkward people
The heat
The cold (I'm not joking)
Too much drinking
Too much studying
Hanszen
Houston
Political apathy
Distance between North/South colleges (5 min walk)
Too small

In truth none of these things are especially bad (well we may have more "socially different" people here than elsewhere), but people are going to gripe about something no matter where they are.

I will say that the majority of Rice students are pretty happy to be here.

I agree most people generally do complain about:

The Heat
The Cold
Awkward People
Professors who do not curve
People who study too much
People who drink too much
Political Apathy

But none of this complaining is serious. I have not met a single person who was not thrilled to be here. The work load may be intense at times but I have always been happy with Rice and I have yet to meet someone who regrets coming here.

the cold? why would people gripe about that? also, is it usually humid as well? or just plain hot...

And, with awkward people who study/drink too much, I wonder what the recreational sports scene's like. Is it convenient to say play a game of ultimate, badminton or golf? (and of course... would there be a bunch of people to do so with u.)

There's not much of a golf scene. But there are many popular sports. Softball, flag football, basketball, swimming, soccer, etc.

Houston is particularly hot and humid. Not a dry heat like New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada -- those desert areas. Anyway, the heat isn't bad at all --- I actually prefer it. Right now we're already having summer days (the kind I'm used to) in March. It's quite enjoyable weather. The worst part - summer - you won't be here for.

People complain about the cold -- but there is no cold down here honestly. They complain about mid 30 degree weather because many people here are from Texas and don't know what cold is. If you're from the North or basically any place that has regular seasons and snow, you'll be laughing at these people.

IM sports are very easy to join. I ended up playing on 4 different teams this year and I didn't even really seek them out. Yes, there is a big ultimate (frisbee) scene here.

I second that there are certainly people here who drink too much and people who study too much. That's why we need more normal people like you to come here.

And yes, no doubt there is a noticeable presence of awkward people around here - I don't know how this compares to other top tier or intellectual schools really, but I suspect its Rice's attractive engineering department. Then again, there are a bunch of awkward academs as well... Anyway, there are tons of cool, socially aware, funny, charismatic, and down-to-earth students around here as well. Before Rice, though, I had never heard of 'awkward turtle' or seen it used so many times .... it's part of Rice's quirkiness, I suppose.

lol! awkward turtle is hilarious

i <3 hanszen

rice is wonderful

people are wierd/quirky but that's what makes it great

Hanszen is pretty sweet.

People really make too big of a deal about the temperature. I came from AK and thought that Houston was going to be very hot and humid throughout the whole year. There have been some hot and humid days but for the most part it has been nice warm tempertures in the 60's-low 70's. And the humidity is nothing compared to FL. Most of the time you don't even notice the humidity. The biggest temperature surprise for me is when it did get cold. Once you get used to temperatures in the 70's anything below 30 seems very cold. I must admit that I complained about the cold a few times and I grew up in a state where winter temperatures do not get above about 20 degrees and summer temperatures do not get above 65.

Lots of club sports, and between colleges sports and Ultimate frisbee - along with some strange sports where people hit tennis balls with golf clubs around campus (?????). My kids are fairly normal and nice looking and social adept and they both like Rice. (One is a junior, and one is an accepted student not yet in attendance.)

why do people gripe about Hanszen?

Beer golf, anxiousmom?

And people gripe about Hanszen because it's lame.

Every college gripes at other colleges.

People are jealous of Wiess and Martel for their nice rooms and of the North Colleges, Wiess, and Hanszen for the better food.

But you can eat at any servery you want - so it's okay. :)

What are ORGO and Hanszen?
