I have been reading this thread for a while (but haven’t posted) - it is inspiring! I’ve been able to get rid of several bags of of clothes, a working tv, and household goods, by scheduling with a few charities that call and pick up from our house. Easy! I wanted to give a tip (though this experienced group may already know this). I recently found out that my town does a “yard sale” on Facebook. It is listed like this - (Name of Town) Yard Sale. I noticed several others when I searched for my town’s site. An item can be listed, with a picture and price, and interested buyers will start posting. It is interesting what people are selling and others are buying. Thank you for all the great stories and information!

I need to go to the bragging thread…must say I’m doing great! I can now fit another car in my garage without having to move stuff first! Best yet, I’ve found some long lost stuff and found supplies that I “knew were in there somewhere…” Not done yet though! Hope the weather holds–it’s nice working outside right now,
It’s become almost a game to curbside stuff and see how long it takes to get picked up.
Keep this thread up! I NEED it!

Check out what this woman has done – she lives in 84 square feet with only 305 possessions.

<a href=“Square Feet: 84. Possessions: 305. - The New York Times”>http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/17/garden/square-feet-84-possessions-305.html

If we all keep this up, we could get to this point too.

They have micro hotels and small apartments springing up that will be higher density in fewer square feet do it will be more affordable. It’s happening in Japan, NYC and maybe soon in Honolulu.

Saw this on the AOL newsfeed this morning and thought of you all and this thread:

<a href=“AOL Style News, Trends and Advice - AOL.com”>AOL Style News, Trends and Advice - AOL.com;

Great article, VH. Of course, there is a link to another article, titled “12 Things every stylish woman should by the age of 30”.

Please tell me that I absolutely have to get rid of my old running shoes! They are done, but I seem to be emotionally attached to them since they carried me for so many miles! :)

My sister lives in a 3 room house. If she buys something new, the old goes out.

Absolutely amazing how much we got done in my house last week. I have a corner of garage ready for charity pick-up. My flower bed has never looked so good. The herbs are doing great; added parsley. She is ruthless in getting rid of mementos. Everyone should borrow her for a week.

My folks have, variously, lived on a boat and an rv…I just do not have that kind of minimalism in me.

4 big bags today. Parted with a lovely wool jacket that I have had for 10 years and worn 3 times. Plus wool makes me itch. I could have taken it to a consignment place but just put it with the rest of the stuff. GF was visiting and made a comment that I have so many clothes–which surprised me as I really do not. Realized later she thought 1/3 that are my H’s are mine but still she motivated met to purge the closet. She graciously a sweater, wool also, that has rarely been worn as it is wool. Anyway, a good time was had by all.

I just spoke to my son; he said anything in his closet can be donated . Naturally, I will keep the fleece jackets, the HS t-shirts, etc., but he is like my sister, does not need or want much.

We donated most of DS’s closet a while ago. He just told me what he doesn’t need on his bookshelves. I also did the linen closets ( we have three) and donated several twin quilts, two extra full/queen comforters, and some misc curtains is was keeping for no good reason.

thumper, I’m down to 2 sheet sets per bed (twin, full, queen), with choice of soft t0shirt or cotton, fleece or cotton. With every bed filled this past week, I know how individual tastes differ. Now it is son’s closet. It is hard.

I read the article about when to donate/throw away clothes and sad to say, probably half of my closet falls into that category. I’m good about getting rid of stained and damaged clothes, but too much space is lost to things that aren’t quite right, don’t fit like I thought they would, or are a little/lot out of style. Suits with shoulder pads anybody??? Spent so much money on that stuff I hate to just get rid of it, but I know that I will never wear it again.

Someday, when I am home alone, I will need to do a complete clean-out. Maybe when it’s finally time to put away the winter clothes. Even so, I’ve done a good job of cleaning things out little by little since January. Although, to look at my house you’d never know! Thankyou all again for the inspiration.

Getting rid of stuff by proxy. I’m in the Midwest visiting my parents, H will be taking a carload of stuff to the annual church rummage sale. I packed it all up and it will be gone when I get home!

While I am getting rid of stuff from my house, I’m adding to the collection at my middle sister’s! (have just packed up two more boxes of my plus size clothes for her)

DH is violently opposed to a cleaning lady, but I only have so much energy and would prefer not to spend it cleaning toilets and mopping floors. As a result, I will probably go back to work 1-2 days/week to fund same. I am expecting WWIII to break out as a result of this decision (the cleaning lady, not the working – at bottom, he thinks I should be working 70 hrs/week like he does).

Being green - sent 2 giant bags of boys clothes from my house to my brother’s house last weekend. Hoping to get more done on S’s room this weekend.

Countingdown, if the housework is your job in your relationship, then you get to decide when, where, how and by whom it should be done. Seems to me that if DH doesn’t like your solution of a cleaning lady, then he can take over the task.

Cleaning People save Marriages. It should be a bumper sticker.

i haven’t really joined in on the discussion, but this thread has inspired me! i felt like too many “things” were finding a permanent home in drawers, closets and cabinets. We normally move around a lot, and since it has been 5 years and no move is in sight–I was wondering how to get motivated to clean out the junk. This has done the trick for me. It’s been a good feeling to make some changes and to get things out the door. I have done so much, I am a bit ahead of schedule! Thanks for the inspiration!

BB: Art Project? you could bronze those running shoes?
