The Bangladeshi Thread

BB012: Where did you hear that? Whitman's very big on diversity, including international students. I can't find the most recent one, but the press release for the admitted students from my year includes at least one student from Bangladesh: Whitman College Sets New Record for Applications: The class entering in the Fall of 2006 will be an academically talented and highly involved group of students

Good luck with your acceptances, all!

Glad to hear that! As I said I heard it from few friends; they are wrong I guess. Thanks for the information.

I think its tym to bring this thread alive! There are only a few Bangladeshis around in CC and we should try to help each otha as much as possible I guess…any Bangladeshi admits to CLASS of 2013 in US and UK please post your views and opinions and most importantly the STATS…so that new applicants would benefit from it and current ones can clear any further doubts about their plans…

Admitted : UCL, Bristol, Manchester, Warwick (UK)
UCLA, UCSB, UC Berkeley

I’ll attend Berkeley most probably. Got rejected by harvard and still on stanfords waiting list… chances are really slim to make it from there …

Stats:

SAT 1 : 2120 ( Writing : 630 Math : 720 Critical : 770 )
Sat 2 : 2400 ( Chemistry, Physics, Maths II )

A level : 4 A
O level : 9 A

Toefl : 112

Accepted @ Stanford and Yale, but rejected at MIT.

Still confused between Yale and Stanford…but inclined mostly towards Stanford for its Astronautics course!

SAT I: 1970
SAT II: 2340

Did my IB Diploma at the United World College of Southern Africa, Swaziland with predicted points of 42-43 (not sure)

O levels : 8 A’s

Admission essays: I think I had 16 drafts for it, gave my best in it.

Teachers Recommendations: I think they were pretty solid, given the enthusiasm the teachers showed when I asked them for it.

Strength: Leadership positions, a lively essay, extracurricular, solid teacher recs and pretty strong supplement essays…

Weakness: poor SAT I scores, but I think colleges in US were aware about the fact that at our UWC we sit for the SAT’s with barely any preparation! (a friend of mine got into MIT last year with 1710 in SAT I!)

Applied for Financial aid: Yup!

now i know why stanford didn’t take me… they already picked a bangladeshi :P

^ Not to show off, but Stanford took two Pakistanis (as far as I know). Considering Bangladesh’s large population, they should at least two from Bangladesh too. No?

They must have taken some other genius from bd then.

and navid … you’d be doing me a big favour if you go to yale… ::D

i hope you’ll do that for a complete stranger … hehe

@ the Game: I guess if we go wid ur statistics then there shud be 15 students at least from each China and India going to Stanford…but if I am not wrong dats hardly da case…I guess besides being need blind, Stanford is ‘location’ blind…lol!

@en1gma: dude u got into Berkley, one of da very best in da world and u still sound dejected (dats what I feel from ur posts)…congrats on Berkley mate… and abt Stanford, I am still awaiting to hear abt da complete finaid, if its not too generous den I might be forced to opt for Yale…but dont u start prayin for dat…I hope u do get into Stanford widout me pullin out and then at least we could give The Game an appropriate answer to his question…lol!

stanford beat berkeley for undergrad handsdown … no doubt about that

and where are you from… dhaka?

do you have msn?

@navidx682268 : Bigwigs like Stanford and MIT are not location blind  They want to maximize diversity that is why they accept the minimum possible applicants from maximium possible countries. As a result, even if you are good enough for an MIT or Berkeley, you might not get in bcoz the uni already accepted too many applicants from your country. That’s the case with a lot of Chinese and Indians.

@En1gma: To add, yale beats Stanford hands down :)

@the Game: There isn’t a huge difference between Yale and Stanford though, they rank as 3 nd 4 respectively…nd for certain disciplines lyk engineering, Yale doesn’t even come close to Stanford…

Ranking isn’t important, quality of education cannot be quanitified. Talk to Yalies and students at Stanford. Then you’ll know which is better.

I do agree dat education cannot be quantified…but da rankings aren’t mere mathematical calculations…dey are made of opinions and relevant statisitics…nd I have friends at both yale and stanford…nd they do agree wid me…do u have smthng aginst Stanford though?..lol!

Why don’t you look it at the other way: I have something for Yale at New H(e)aven.

well said mate! r u heading for Yale dis year though…i know dat a girl called shehzeen from Pakistan going to Yale…

what would you consider better?

berkeley… or cornell?

dats a tough one en1gma…cornell for me…first of all its an ivy league(r)…and secondly its less crowded…u wont just be anotha face in da crowd…

@navidx682268: Thanks! I will attend Yale for grad school. As for Shehzeen, is she the one from LGS Defence? A couple of guys hope to join Yale too.

@En1gma: Cal Berkeley straight on! Never underestimate the Cal sunshine!
