the battle of koreans

hi fellow koreans!!!!!

i am a proud korean. i am proud of many koreans who devoted their passion to succeed in the college app process. since there are many of us who are talented, our application pool makes it harder for us to get in, right?

But what if I am full korean, who can speak fluent korean, but lived in germany half of my life (all middle thru high school). do the adcoms look at me as a german applicant, or a korean applicant? I mean, germany is like my second home.

I am a junior, and i just saw my friend getting rejected from cambridge. i thought i had solid stats, but today i got my report card and this is clear not the case.... :X

Good luckk with the applications!

Your stats and activities are ridiculous. Nobody at my school lifts a finger to add solar panels or what have you. I don’t even think we’re allowed. XD
Your grades probably won’t be a problem since colleges know different schools have different standards and scoring criteria. What they’re looking for is evidence that you’ve excelled beyond most of your peers, making the best possible use of the resources you are provided with.
I’m not an expert (just a high school senior), but I think you definitely should apply.
You’d probably still count as a Korean applicant. They’ll consider your situation, but technically you’re an international student from Korea.

I’m Korean, too, and lived half my life in the US and Canada… my stats aren’t so good as yours, even though I practically grew up speaking English. :P

Here’s my stuff:

School: okay public school in upstate New York
GPA: 95ish
weighted: 4.5
rank: 4/481 (I believe it dropped since the beginning of the year, but oh well)
SAT I:

2nd time - 800 (CR), 690 (M), 800 (W); 2290 total
3rd time - 760 (CR), 770 (M), 690 (W); 2220 total
SAT IIs:
Literature - 780
US History - 770

APs:
World History - 5
US History - 5
Participation in Government (currently taking)
Literature and Composition (ditto)
Spanish (ditto)
AB Calculus (ditto)
Biology (ditto)

College courses:
Pre-calculus - A (Siena College)
Intermediate Spanish 102 - A (SUNY Albany)
Intermediate Spanish 103 - pending (SUNY Albany)
Latin 102 or 103 - pending (SUNY Albany)

Awards:
gold medal in National Latin Exam (twice)
bronze medal in National Spanish Exam
^these are nothing awards; around 6 people at my school get gold medals in Latin each year. Bronze medal in Spanish isn’t amazing, either.

Extra-Curriculars:
National Honor Society (11, 12)
Student Government (10, 11)
Amnesty International (11, 12)
Latin Club (10, 11, 12) - Keeper of the Sacred Chicken
New Global Citizens (11, 12) - cashier, poster-maker, fundraiser, advertiser… whatever necessary
Youth Court (11, 12) - served as prosecutor, defender, jury foreperson, judge, and juror in real-life cases
Peer Tutoring (12) - I tutor after school in Latin, Spanish, and Biology

Etc.
I skipped two grades.
My hobbies are writing and learning foreign languages. I have no impressive works/accomplishments to display, other than my mad shorthand skillz.

Schools I’ve applied to:
UC Berkely
UPenn
Yale
Princeton
Williams
Rice
Swarthmore
UToronto

I wish I didn’t slack off/skip class as much, but oh well. XD

*just a note: i’ve been told it depends on your citizenship?
im not sure how far that goes, because ethnicity-wise, we’re still korean…
iunno, i came to australia when i was one and few months, so ive lived in australia for 16 years, and i have an aussie citizenship… you’d think thatd be enough, wouldn’t you? lol.

You will be considered an ethnic Korean (for diversity purposes) but as an academic German.

Now that’s only half-bad as you will be put in the Korean pot (which is huge), but evaluatet with German standards. And for that matter you look great! You stand out from the pool and beat the majority of the small yet strong EU-pool. That sould give you a bit of an advantage over most home-trained Koreans.

Btw what school do you go to? JFK (just guessing from the mun)?
