How did you all plan who gets which bed? It seems like if it was on a first come first serve basis, there would be some resentment.

i want the bottom bedddd
haha

i agree. well, wont we get our roommate assignments earlier? so i guess we could talk it out then? i have no idea..

yeah its pretty much first come first pick --- but, you could always try hashing out with your roomies beforehand...

Yes, when you receive the roomate assignment, your roomate(s)' information will be provided (name, phone #, email). From there, you may contact them about responsibilities/rules/which bed you want, or just get to know them.

If you run into a conflict about bed assignments, then it will be a long year for you ..

someone had an idea that you switch each quarter so everyone gets each bed once, sounded good to me

^^ by the time winter quarter comes around i think the three of you would just want to stay where you are. i think it will be a hassle to move stuff around.

if you get the bottom bed, get the desk under the loft and not the other ones. if you get the other ones, your roommate will be walking all over your desk to get to his/her bed.

I NEED the bottom bunk for every quarter, I move around to much to be on the top bunk, and plus I use the bathroom at night, and don't want to fall down the ladder at 3 or 4 am. :)

I am so glad to be one of the few freshman doubles...

The top bunks have guard rails (at some other schools, they don't!) so falling off is not a big concern...and I move around a lot too.

The disadvantage of the bottom bunk is that visitors have a tendency to sit on your bed.

Also, if you aren't in a res hall, you should be able to move around the furniture...I had the lofted bed so my desk was originally under my bed (which can feel dark and cramped) but I eventually moved around my furniture and put my desk by the window. (You do have to move everything back before you move out though.)

I just kinda talked about it with my roommates beforehand through email and AIM...though one of my roommates facebook-messaged the two of us first asking that she get the bottom bunk...later told us she was ok with whatever...never really had great relations with that roommate...but bed arrangements turned out comfortable enough.

i stole my roommate's bottom bunk when she went home for the weekend :)
it's not recommended unless you're on good terms with them.

i care more about getting a desk by the window than gettin a bed on the bottom, that desk under the loft doesnt look too nice =p

Having the top bunk isn't really a big deal. I recommend the lofted bed with the desk underneath. This way you are able to claim an entire corner of the room. If you are reading a book or something but don't want to climb out of bed to put it away, just lean over and throw it on your desk or chair.
The lofted bed may be an issue for girls though. Rather than getting a full closet, you get this wardrobe thing that is considerably smaller.

i had the lofted bed with the desk/wardrobe under as well. got there first and chose that.

my reasoning: i wanted my own space! didn't want anybody sleeping above or below me, so i took the lofted bed. then i didn't want someone else to have the desk under me (cuz that's just... weird if they're up late typing and i'm asleep) so i took the desk. that left the wardrobe, which i threw in for good measure (worked out fine since i was the least girly of the three of us, and had the fewest clothes).

other space-saving ideas: we put one dresser in the closet, and we put our fridge in the other side of the closest.

idea for the roommate who wants to isolate him/herself from others: take the aforementioned bed/desk/wardrobe configuration, turn the desk so that it faces left (the wall), turn wardrobe so it faces right (the other desk). then, pull your comforter/quilt down from your bed so it hangs like a tent and hides you from the rest of the room. emmeline can assist with further explanations. i SOOOO wish i had done that :(

liyana or emmeline, lets here more about this configuration, is there a diagram for it somewhere online :) haha just kidding, but it sounds cool.

You can draw it out on artpad for us!

I say you just pull straws...if you're really unhappy with your result, then you can negotiate. But doing a random assignment the first time around makes it more fair, in my opinion :)

Liyana, can you draw that out ? I am going to consider that.

can't draw it out... well, i could on paper but that won't help much ;)

okay, here's what emmeline did.
let's say you walk into the room, and the bed/desk/wardrobe thingy is on the right side of the room. the desk and wardrobe are (obviously) under the bed with the desk on the left, wardrobe on right.
all you do is turn the desk 90 degrees left, so it faces the wall with the window. turn your wardrobe the other way so it faces your roomie's desk.
now you have a little "cave" under your bed, and you can pull your quilt down from the top of your bed and cover yourself, thus hiding from the rest of the room.
surprisingly effective :)

hehe I've seen some of those bed cave/fortresses

hrm, the space saving idea sounds good, but I think de neve has bigger closets than most buildings so I don't think my dresser will fit in the closet :/
but then again, I probably won't take the dresser shrug
fridge in closet? are there outlets in there?

no outlets, but extension cords are your friend :)
