The Best Darned Video Game Thread

So this is a thread for gamers...tabletop excluded. The point here is just to discuss games. Give personal reviews of new games. Discuss trends in games. Complain. Talk about the mad pwnage from last night. Whatever.

I know there are some gamers on this site, and if my experiences in gaming (stretching back to the NES's heyday) are any indication, we're mostly a gregarious lot.

So I'll start with a review.

Call of Duty 3 - XBox 360

Graphics - 4.5/5
Sound- 5/5
Gameplay - 4/5
Control - 4/5
Overall - 4.5/5

I have to admit, I enjoy this game. Although it's not quite at the Gears of War level of visual pizazz, it's still a pretty nice meal for the eyes. I occasionally see an ugly texture here and there, but I also saw the same thing in GoW on occasion as well. Of course, it's not fair to only compare CoD3 to GoW, since GoW is not the only shooter on the market. But these sort of benchmark games are somewhat limited on the 360 right now, so I'm using what I have available.

Gameplay is what you'd expect. Run, kill Nazis, run some more, watch France get blown to smithereens, kill more Nazis. Tired? Yes. Boring? No. The game definitely subscribes to the Halo school of "10 seconds of fun repeated over a long period" line of thought. This is not a very cerebral sort of game (at least at the middle difficulty). But it's fun, and that's enough in most cases.

AI can be buggy at times, but GoW and GRAW both suffered from stupid teammates as well, so I'm not going to send CoD packing for something that has yet to really work in any game. But I can dream.

The sound is awesome. I love games that don't make guns sound like miniature cannons with sound amplifiers attached. The M1 sounds like an M1. The Thomson sounds like a Thomson. Wee.

Overall, a fun game.

Next from me: retroreviews. I'm going to go back and review old games with my current eyes. Expect much "what the heck?" to ensue.

Minesweeper = (∞) P\/\/||4G3.

QED. :D

Minesweeper

Graphics - 2/5
Sound - N/A
Gameplay - 3/5
Control 5/5
Overall 3.5/5

I must admit, I never got into Minesweeper like other people I know (the previous poster included.) For one, the game is too easy to master from patterns, and it offers little in the way of replay value or added value (no bonus stages for download? no new textures packs? Pfft...)

But it's still one of the best time wasters on the planet, so it gets 3/5 from me.

Besides, everyone knows that Solitaire is better.

Speaking of games, what are the opinions on the Wii so far?

Too easy, eh. What is your best time for intermediate? Expert? Do you know about Minesweeper Clone?

I'm not lame. :)

The best video game I've ever played...

I'm going to go with Pokemon. My childhood in Japan was dominated by Pokemon since I couldn't afford to buy a PlaySation or a N64. I always had to visit my friends to play those consoles...

ChaosTheory,

I don't remember my times anymore, as I pretty much stopped playing it after early high school. They were good.

Never heard of Minesweeper Clone, but I'll check it out.

ManUtd20Ole,

Pokemon is way underrated by most of the current gaming crowd. There's a lot of depth there that tends to be unexplored.

I know everyone plays it, and it's too "pop culture," but Halo 2 is prbly the new gen FPS, one of the best ever. I also loved all the Kirby games on SNES.

Halo 2 is definitely popular, but who cares? Good is good even if it's popular.

I must admit, however, that I'm partial to the keyboard and mouse when it comes to shooters. Controllers still strike me as an imperfect solution. I wish I could configure my 360 to be useable with a keyboard and mouse...

or can I?

Super Smash Bros and Super Smash Bros Melee are both awesome.

I prefer SSB original, it's defintiely the most fun game I've ever played.

My favorite game of all time though is The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening

Super Mario Bros on SNES are great games.

uhm hello mario party!?

Niiiiiiice, I forgot that one. My friends liked it more than I did, I guess.

I think it's as hard to choose a favorite game as it is to choose a favorite movie.

If I had to say which game has been played the most, it's obviously WoW. 30+ days of playtime and counting.

For sheer fun, though, it was probably either Zelda: LttP or Chrono Trigger.

Super Mario 64!!!!!!!!

Super Mario World

Grand Theft Auto 3

Mario Kart 64

'Nuff said.

Mario Kart 64 was definitely one of the best games of all time.

I gave my brothers both Call of Duty 3 and Gears of War for Christmas, and I've been playing CoD. The thing I dont' like is that you can't skip through the long animated storylines before a mission like you could in CoD 2. Maybe I just didn't find the right menu to turn that annoying feature off, but it kinda sucks. But the game itself is great. Very nice graphics.

I haven't played Gears of War, but the graphics look nice on that as well from what I've seen just watching.

Star Fox 64! 9/10
Super Smash Bros. Melee! 7/10
Dynamite Headdy! 6.5/10
Sonic 1/2! 6.5/10
Super Mario Bros. 3! 8.5/10
Resident Evil 4! 8.5/10

FEAR for Xbox 360 is pretty good.

This is my first game for the X box, but the game still scares the crap out of me, especially when I play in the dark.

4/5 it could be higher, but since I haven't played too many games with the 360 I can't comment much.

how about...the game they play in stay alive...lol

Icarus,

I'm in the same boat as you on CoD 3. I'll have to complain to my girlfriend's bro-in-law, who was a lead programmer. Grr, unskippable cutscenes are FTL.

Retroreview: Final Fantasy 2 (4 in Japan and recent releases)

Graphics- 3.5/5
Sound- 4.5/5
Control- 5/5
Gameplay- 2.5/5
Overall- 3.5/5

This one holds up pretty well despite its age. The story does seem dated, but I think that the new translation helps. Graphically, it's your standard 90s Square fare. Clean pixel sprites, lush detail in the monsters, beautiful spell effects-- it doesn't compare to FF6 (3 in the US), but I'm going to be forgiving based on its "retroness."

The sound is great. Nobuo Uematsu's soundtracks really shine, and the spells all sound good. Very nice 16-bit aural experience.

But the gameplay...did not hold up well. Random battle encounters are even more frustrating today than they were last decade. And boy did Square give you a lot of them. I counted 10 in a very small room. It's just abhorrent. Sure, it was the flavor of the day, but it seems like instead of trying to figure out better battles or more interesting monsters, Square took the "if we give them enough, they'll die eventually." The bosses, on the other hand, are still a blast.

Overall, this is still worth playing, but FF3(6) is still the king of the 16-bit FF era.
