I don't know if I'm going but I think this would be a good topic to discuss.

Private: Dobie
Public: San Jac.

Jester is good if you want a busy place, but the rooms suck.

I'm guessing private costs more than public? Most of my friends are going to Jester. I'm kinda picky about my living space though, how far away is San Jac. from Jester? Would it be a hassle walking back and forth at say 2AM?

Some of the privates are the same or cheaper i think. Then there's others that are expensive.

http://www.thecastilian.com/prices.html

that's one of the privates that are cheap

san jac and jester are like right across the street i think

I hope I can get into San Jac. UT determines who gets first choice by the date you paid your housing application fee right?

san jac is pretty pricey though...by living at jester, or any other dorm on campus, you could save a few hundred dollars, which coiuld be used as spending money instead. Think about it....i know i am. Does anyone have a ranking of the dorms, from best place to live to worst? That would be veeery helpful!

To ask or read on lots of things UT oriented.
http://www.livejournal.com/community/ut_austin/

That's too much info to sort through. Haha.

I think that in some architecture (i know i spelled that wrong!) jester was voted as one of the ugliest buildings in the WORLD. it was, after all, supposidly built by some man who was world reknowned for building jails.

wth?! haha I might have to go live there for one year. Oh man . . .

i meant architecture magazine, btw

Ugly on the outside or ugly everywhere? It's liveable in there though right?

My d stayed at Jester for an honors colloquium and it almost kept her from considering UT. But how much time will you be there? Plus I hear that there's a lot going on in Jester because there are so many people living there. So I guess it depends on how important the beauty of your physical surroundings is to you. If you want to be where there are lots of people then it'll probably be okay.

the private dorms are pretty nice too you know.

Dobie is extremely nice, you even get a living room, but it's pretty pricy also.

I'm going to stay at Castillian, it's cheaper than dobie but they give neat things like a cleaning service, and you're only sharing the bathroom with 3 other people.

The campus dorms let you have private bathrooms like that too, but they don't have cleaning services. .

No, not all of them do. Only part of jester offers private bathrooms.

Oh man, do you also know what's the difference sizewise between a single and double room on campus?

they should vary based on dorm.

San Jac will obviously have the biggest, the others will be smaller. Also sometimes you get a little screwed over, I know people who signed for jester but they ran out of room, so study rooms and baesements were made into dorms.

Actually they mention study rooms and basements being used as temporary housing on the UT housing website. These rooms are supposedly just used until other rooms become available. They also say that some students actually elect to stay in those spaces because some of them aren't that bad and they are more private than a double.
