I already got into UW and am interested in Computer Engineering, but I'm unsure if CompE or Electrical Engineering is better for me. This is what my aspirations are in college. I hope to design/help build devices (like computer chips) that could help different industries, like the medical industry or the vehicle industry. I believe that almost everything in this world is becoming computerized, like the machines used at hospitals are computerized and the cockpit of an airplane is computerized, etc. That's why I think that a CompE degree would be the best for me to achieve my goal. However, I'm unsure of this. I wanted other peoples experiences/opinions on this topic. Another reason I want to do CompE is because I could study both the hardware and software components of computers so if I end up getting a job at like Google, it could be helpful to know parts of both worlds!

I feel as if an EE degree is the closest thing to CompE, but I think EE is more "building" oriented. So is it better than CompE for what I want to do?

Please help me decide which degree would best suite me fulfill my goals.

Please help give you opinions!!

I would say definitely go with electric engineering. My father went for EE to work Texas Instruments doing microchips for calculators and later for laptops/home computers as they became popular in the 90s. Computer and electric engineering go hand-in-hand, and you can start off with Comp for a year or two and easily switch to EE and still get your bachelor’s in 4 years and move on to your master’s. There is a lot to do with a degree in EE.

I was initially actually interested in EE over CompE, but, I have heard a lot say that CompE jobs are booming and will continue to boom much more than EE for a long time.

Is that true at all? I honestly don’t mind doing either degree, I just want to end up in a position where I have the choice of doing what I like (what i mentioned in my post - build/design devices that could help bigger industries).

It is likely true that Computer Engineering will continue to grow over the years, but it doesn’t mean that EE won’t or that there won’t be jobs available–BOTH majors are going to still have plenty of jobs in the future. What I would guess (and this is a guess) is that if you wanted to design and work with a wider range of things (like I said, my father made designs for calculators, laptops, cell chips, etc) EE might be better. If your heart is set specifically on everything computerized, CompE would be the better option. Computer chips, etc. are used in…everything. So this is a flexible option, likely just as much as EE is. I think I might be a little biased since my father was EE and I’m going to be as well As earlier stated, most of the classes are the same. Try some of both and find your niche!
