I'm currently a junior and I know that you need to start early to get in to any programs over the summer. Last year I didn't start looking until May and I had to settle with volunteer work instead of something better. (though volunteering is good also)

I know of both the RSI and NASA SHARP programs for the summer, but what other prestigious programs are available? Since those are supposed to be extremely difficult to get into, especially for a white male. I would prefer something involving marine biology, but anything science is great.

So if you know of any summer science programs or internships could you list them here. Also, they need to be either very inexpensive, free, or paid. Thanks.

if your looking to do something with marine biology, look into schools that are in coastal areas (southern california and florida come to mind) and see if a) there's a school you're interested in in that area and b) if they have a summer marine biology program for rising seniors.

i want to think it was occidental who had a 5 week program...

but again. just search out schools your interested in and try to see if they offer summer programs. oftentimes you have to spend a loooong time looking for those programs within the website. but it's worth it.

Yeah, I found a few I'm interested in. Looks like there are a couple different paid research internships at Cornell.

No luck finding anything for marine bio yet. So far everything costs over $3000 and I would rather not spend any money since I'll have to pay for a lot of it myself. Plus that $3000-$5000 would be better spent on actual college in my opinion...

I'll apply to RSI, if I get in I'll try to be placed in marine bio but if not that I'll probably have to settle for something in another area...cancer is one of the only things I see.

LBW is AWESOME - I totally recommend it. It's UPenn Wharton's "Leadership in the Business World" program for about 60 prospective high school seniors from around the world.

hey, well this past summer, 200ish people applied, and 60 people got accepted. The thing is, this isn't very advertised, except on the Wharton website. That means people who apply are motivated enough to check out the Wharton website. I'm not sure about the average stats. I got 1500+ on my SAT, and I know a bunch of kids at LBW got around that. Most of the people there have lots of amazing accomplishments in leadership/business; either that or they had very high aspirations toward that field.

Over30: I have no idea if I'll be able to get a scholarship, I guess even if something is pretty expensive and I am interested I'll apply anyways just to see.

David06: I went to the summer program last year at Brown and I wasn't too crazy about it. The professor was almost never there and just gave us assignments to do so I pretty much learned nothing. It might have just been my experience but just warning you. The people are very good there though.
