The best way to prepare for ACT

Do you guys know any good ACT study books? Which one has practice tests that are the most similar to the real one or has the best test taking strategies?

Thanks! :slight_smile:

I used the 2015 Princeton Review ACT book and scored a 35.

I used the 2015 Princeton Review ACT book and scored a 15.

15? @theofrelord

I bought Kaplan and borrowed many other ACT books from the library, but ended up not finding anything really useful in them. I recommend that you try a practice test - if you score around/over 25 for science and reading and 28 for english and math, then you most likely just need practice. I only needed a few tips from my other friends who were taking the ACT to bring up my scores by a few points, which I’d be happy to share with you if you need help bringing up your score in a particular section.

I didn’t get to use my Kaplan book because it was so big and I knew there was no way I would get through the material in the 3 weeks I had left before the test, but scored only 35s and 36s with my method.

Honestly, the ACTs aren’t meant to be difficult if you know what you’re doing in school and I think all these companies (Kaplan, Princeton, Barron’s) aggrandize its complexity to persuade students to invest their $ and time in books they could do without.

@juniormint2017 how’d you do on the real thing?

Used Princeton for a 31, but I honestly don’t think it helped much

@wanderlustgal I got 35 on everything except science which I got a 36 on

@juniormint2017 awesome! as for online tests, when you were doing just sections, did you do the individual tests (like the clickable mc ones) or the pdfs of the entire things?

@wanderlustgal I did the pdfs but in the beginning, just did individual sections:) I began doing the whole thing after I was able to finish in time for the sections and get most of them right. Good luck!

@juniormint2017 Thank you! SO helpful! And congrats on the great score!

@juniormint2017 oh sorry one more question, when you were doing tests did you print them out or just do them online? bc i dont want to waste all that paper and ink , ya know

@wanderlustgal You can do them online, but its better if you print so its more similar to real test taking. Can you have a parent or friend print them at work? Printing at home would be really expensive!

@wanderlustgal I practiced the sections on a large digital tablet with a notebook in hand to write down the answers. I also took off a min. or two from the actual time that was given for that section to make sure that I would have time to fill in the bubbles in the actual test.

I printed out a few tests using my school printer (which was free) and used that for taking the full tests and last minute section practices. Because I practiced taking the test a little less time than is actually given, in the actual ACT, I finished all my sections except math 5-10 min before the time was up, which allowed me to go back and double check my work. (I did end up finding a few mistakes when I was double checking, so I would say that if you’re aiming for a perfect score, you should practice finishing the sections early enough to go back on them).
