the big list of acceptances

Please add my daughter to the accepted list for OCU!

A Senior from my D's HS got into Brown last year after a deferral. This girl did an AMAZING Senior Project which involved designing her own clothing. She sent them updates with info on this after January. So-- if your student has ANY new developments, awards, EC's, etc. I would send them along to the Brown admissions commmittee. It couldn't hurt.

Please add my daughter to the acceptance list for NYU/Tisch ED.

Wow, a plethora of information from you as usual. We are lucky to have a college pro on board here.

Sounds like my student has a chance of an admit later, but nothing to hang the old hat on. Onward and upward.

I loved what you said about keeping in touch and updating with admissions/advisors during the waiting process. This is exactly what the Director of Recruitment at SMU says about their wait list. You should keep in periodic contact, and let the school know you are still really interested. At SMU, that will move you up the wait list. Of course, by the time they get to you it could be March and with other firm and attractive offers in hand, it often comes too late.

Thanks again for the insight as mom and pro. This is a learning process for all of us.

xxx,Mary Anna

Mary Anna, any kid who is deferred should send updates of new accomplishments or activities and interest in the school. But most who are applying to a school like Brown and were deferred in the ED round, won't have lots of other offers in hand until April. Schools of that sort have ED or EA and then RD in April. My older D heard from ALL of her schools April 1.

Also, for schools like Brown, the deferral pile (do not confuse that with waitlist which I explained in another post recently) is NOT ordered (for that matter at Ivies, the waitlist in May is not ordered either.) Students on a deferred pile will be considered with all the other RD applicants in the pool. In the case of waitlists in May AFTER all acceptances have been sent, if they have to go to a waitlist if the slots are not all filled, they look to see who they want to fill that slot, but the kids are not ordered. If they need more classics majors, more kids from rural areas, more of a certain minority group, whatever, that might be who they pull from the waitlist. A waitlist is NOT a deferral. With the deferrals, they simply are looked at with the regular applicant pool, no ordering to it. Updating them is wise and continued interest is wise but is not going to necessarily get you in. The odds are very low. Certainly someone should do all they can to move a deferral to an acceptance, but be realistic and put loads of energy into their other applications and if it happens, it does, and if not, there are plenty of fine schools out there.

Susan

Yes, I appreciate this additional information.

SMU does things a little differently, that's why I referred to it as a wait list. It is different from a deferral and ranked.

I had a student in that exact situation last year. A full ride scholarship offer from CMU in MT fairly early on and a wait list at SMU that lasted until March when they finally went to offer. By then, my student had taken the CMU offer.

Thanks again,
xxx,Mary Anna

However, at schools like CMU, the National Reply Date is May 1 and the student need not give their intentions to enroll until then and so a student CAN wait until all their offers are on the table. Your student did not HAVE to take the CMU offer as early as he/she did. Of course, I can't blame someone for taking such an offer :D.

Does any one know if OCU abides by the National Reply Date of May 1. They are requesting that we respond to their offer of admission by January 13th and my daughter still has several more auditions to go (as well as the waiting that goes with them!)

I can't answer you about OCU but that does not sound fair. May 1 IS the National Reply date. Surely a student should be able to have all their offers before making a decision. I can't imagine replying by Jan. 13 as my kids had not heard from ANY schools by that point.

I guess it was an early round, but it was not Early Decision, was it? ED is binding and so normally you have to reply early (and take it for that matter) and withdraw all of your other apps. But I do not think OCU is ED, right? If it is EA, that is not binding and a student should have to May 1 (that's the case elsewhere!) or if Rolling Admissions, same thing.

I can't imagine being bound to reply by Jan. 13. That goes against what colleges have agreed to nationally with regard to May 1.

But, as you can see, I am NOT in the know regarding OCU.

You used the word "requesting" which I'd want to know if it is "required" because if it is not required, you should not be obligated to do so, if you are waiting on other decisions. Call and find out.
Susan

they may just want a response on the scholarship. But, that doesn't mean you've committed to the school.

Congrats to everyone who got into their schools!

Unfortunatly I (Mommd's daughter) got the rejection letter from NYU Steinhardt today :( It's very upsetting but I think I'll make it through...so just take me off the academic acceptance list. I've still got Syracuse, Ithaca, and UMich to audition at.

Academic acceptance & scholarship to Otterbein, came in the mail yesterday. Thanks Otterbein! :)

Not a B.F.A.er- but I am a musical theatre girl to boot. And I used to post here regularly. Shout outs to soozievt and theatremom ( sheesh- I forgot the spelling :( ) - anyway. YALE 2010!

Dani, I'm gonna shout it out publicly...yippee!! You go girl! I always knew you had what it took but thankfully Yale agreed :D You'll have a blast there if you opt to attend. It's a perfect choice for you. And you're perfect for them. Celebrate, enjoy, congrats!

Samia.....nice! step in a the right direction....good for you!

Love2Sing....I know it is disappointing but it is ONE school and you will rebound and set your sites on those other wonderful schools on your list. This time next year, you'll be in college having the time of your life and any single college decision will be a distant memory. You just have to hang in there....you'll end up some place you really like. There is more than one school out there where you'd be happy and thrive.

Wow - I just can't believe it. One of my d's most talented friends just found out she did NOT get into NYU, ED. She is amazingly talented and is an honors student. She is also one of the sweetest, most modest young performers I have ever met. Just goes to show you, you NEVER know. I would have bet a million dollars that she would have gotten in, that's how talented this girl is. I'm sure she'll get in somewhere, but I feel so bad cause she wanted NYU so much.

My OCU letters came. I didn't get into musical theatre. However, I did get accepted into theatre performance, with an additional $1000/semester scholarship, which means that if I go there, I would only have to pay about $8000/year, including room and board. And that's really good. The January 13th thing does worry me, though. Is that only for the scholarship? Because I won't have even auditioned for Emerson by then, which is my #1 school. (OCU is #2)

In the case of my D's acceptance to PPU, she had to send a deposit to save her spot in Jazz dance. It is refundable however. Perhaps OCU's is too?

rossji, what a reminder how subjective this experience is (and at NYU there's just one auditioner)...not to mention that SO much rides on beining "on" on the day you audition. Here's hoping that the talented friend will have some great acceptances down the road
