The biggest dilemma of my life.

I am in a HUGE dilemma. I was accepted at Wisconsin-Madison. I went to visit this weekend and I absolutely LOVED the campus. I really feel like Wisconsin would be the ideal place for me as an eventual business major (I applied undecided and I am looking to transfer into the business school).
But here’s the thing…I am still waiting for Michigan- Ann Arbor. As much as I loved Madison, I know that Michigan is better for me academically and academics are my number one priority. Yet, I still have not seen Michigan. Nevertheless, I will visit the school the day that I get in (no joke). I applied mid-November to UMich and I haven’t heard a word except a letter a couple weeks ago explaining that I am still being evaluated and deferred at this time. I am just ready to give up and go to Wisconsin.
My dream is to be a Wolverine but the way that Michigan is handling the application process really makes me cynical. I am not just sad for myself but everyone else that is in my position.
I’d rather not go into all details, but I need to be an actual student at Wisconsin to reserve some of the things that I want. I am afraid that if I wait too long for Michigan and end up not getting it, I put everything at Wisconsin up for jeopardy. It’s such a big gamble that may screw me in the end. Does anyone have any idea when everyone will hear from Michigan and if they will inform you if you have to go on the waitlist? Also, most importantly, how should I handle this situation?

I appreciate all the help I can get. I know I can always look towards the collegeconfidential community for help.

i am in a similar situation, i applied to Michigan in october, Wisconsin in november, got deferred from both. my dad went to Michigan and Michigan was my dream up until this year. I'm going to be to major in business and i know Michigan's business school is amazing. Anyways sometime this winter i decided that I would choose Wisconsin (if accepted) over Michigan. I did it for a couple of reasons, first of all i think Madison is nicer than Ann Arbor, 2nd of all i thought that Wisconsin would be more fun, 3rd of all i want to enjoy the next 4 years instead of being over worked and stressed at Michigan. Michigan's business school is cut-throat and i dont know if i would ever get into Ross. The two schools are similar academically, i know Michigan is a little better but i think Wisconsin is more on my level and the Wisconsin atmosphere imo is better than Michigan's. So i have been accepted to Wisconsin and will be attending Wisconsin next year regardless of my Michigan decision.

I'll probably goto Wisconsin or Boston College (Both Honors) if I don't get into Michigan also.

wow CCrunner, i am in the exact same posistion as you, into boston college & wisconsin honors, waiting on my umich defferal,

i am visiting both wisconsin and BC next week, and if i hear from umich, then umich as well (i got into boston u too)

I'm visiting BC, Wisconsin, and Michigan (even though I'm not in yet) next week also haha.

I got into Madison as well and applied for housing and the whole bit. I don't really see what you will miss by waiting? Orientation and all that is a long time away and you onle have 1 more week to twait for michigan. I know I'm just gonna sit and wait and hope for the best.

I think it'll be more than a week until we get a letter, probably more like 10 days or so.

Honestly -- at this point, I would not risk anything on the hope of being accepted at Michigan. It's very competitive this year. They've deferred thousands of students.

I'm not holding my breath; I've got a nice list of other schools as well.

From what I've heard, they're going to get back to everybody before April 15th, which gives you 2 weeks to work on a pretty important decision...

I wonder if something happened that caused umich to royally screw up the application process, or maybe this was all part of the plan? soooo many deferrals...

Michigan is trying to avoid the 6000-student freshman classes of the past two years. Problem is, while they have decided to admit fewer, the application numbers are up over last year. I don't know that I'd call that a screw-up.

what are you risking by waiting? I don't know of any risks at all and thats why I'm waiting.

well if you enroll 1000ish students less than the previous year, and a lot of unusually qualified students apply in that given year, that means the average student quality is going to raise dramatically.

then your middle-50% GPA and SAT/ACT scores raise, which makes the school more attractive to future students, which means even more qualified students will apply next year, etc etc... positive feedback loop. pretty good for the university i think

of course, if you got deferred, that's probably distressing to hear. but if you get in (and I assume a lot of the deferred students will indeed be offered admission), you will know that you have accomplished something.

hey OP I was in the same position as you!!!

It all comes down to the logical decision and your passion. If you love Wisconsin and it's a great fit for you, then go there. However, nothing hurts by waiting and you don't want to regret anything. I, personally, have chosen Wisconsin for the exact same reasons you said you liked about it. Is cost a factor?

Cost is really not a factor for me. I am thankful it's not as much of a burden for me as others, though I wish everyone could have an equal chance of affording schools. It's very unfortunate.
Yet, I would still need to take out some loans. If I get into UMich, and since it is a 40,000 dollar school, I can't see how anyone could afford that without hesitation. My parents would want me to take out at most 10 G's a year. If I go to Wisconsin, it would probaly be around 5 G's a year. My parents would feel a lot more financially comfortable if I go to Wisconsin considering it is around 10,000 dollars less a year (even with private housing).
But I see it as this: there is no price tag on my education, even if my parents see it differently. It is that important to me. And going to a prestigious school like Michigan or even Wisconsin will hopefully get me a great job so that I can pay off my loans.
I just have no idea how student loans work and if I should risk paying for a school like Michigan, instead of more cost effective Wisconsin. Even through all this, I am still leaning towards Wisconsin simply because I haven't found out from UMich and my chances for UMich look slim at this point...

blink- thats about the same deal as my parents offered me. The others schools are good (wisc, texas,u of i and miami) I'm not sure what to do. Michigan is my first choice and it almost double the cost of u of i and miami and $10k more than wisc and texas.
i'm going into business and will go to grad school.

10k of loans a year is not too bad. My sister takes out similar student loans at Penn and she makes about 10k a summer at her internship so shes able to pay off a full year of loans in one summer...Not too bad. Even without internship she was able to make about 5 grand a summer which is half a years loan so you wont have too much of a financial burden after college as it will prob take 5 years tops to pay off your loans.

Cost is obviously a factor for your parents if they are spelling out different deals depending on where you go and asking you to take out loans. It is NOT typical for students to make $10K a summer - or even $5K a summer. Most of the students I know are lucky if they make a couple thousand. There is a big difference between graduating with $40K in debt vs $20K in debt. Wisconsin-Madison sounds like a good choice for you.
