The Car Issue

I'll be moving from the east coast.
Can you have a car? Do you need a car? etc. etc. <3

i hear the buses go pretty mcuh everywhere.

my friend was able to survive 2 years without a car just fine, so im guessing youll be alright.

Yeah cars are difficult at UCLA. Get a motorcycle - much cooler anyway, and traffic becomes a non-issue :)

Cars and LA are a problem, and Parking Permits are very expensive I hear. Everything you'll reasonably need is in walking distance, so I'm not bringing my car.

Most first-years do not have cars. I was doing fine without one until I got an internship in Century City, now it is kind of annoying to find other rides there. It is really hard to get parking anyway, so you would have to have a strong reason for needing a car.

It is pretty easy to survive without one as most things you would need are in Westwood and there are easy ways to get to Santa Monica/Beverly Center via bus.

Big Blue Bus > Car

hahaha flopsy I soooooo disagree.

But I concede that it certainly makes more sense, especially for a first year who wouldn't be driving home regularly.

allie, if you're from OC, then I can see why having a car on campus might appeal to you. But CareBear98 is from the east coast, and is not likely to drive home or elsewhere for Thanksgiving, winter (Christmas) break or spring break.

My suggestion to CareBear is to forget about a car freshman year. Consider it for sophomore year, once you have acclimated to the UCLA campus culture and to SoCal in general.

I dont see how being a sophomore vs a freshman makes any difference in if you should consider bringing a car or not. You get "acclimated" in like 2 weeks. Wouldnt it make more sense for a newly transplanted SoCaler to have a car to explore all that SoCal has to offer?

CareBear, its a matter if you really want a car or not. If you do, you should try for a permit (although don't get your hopes up...its really hard to get one).

I'm a first year and I got a permit for next quarter. I dont know how much I'll use my car (I'll probably find excuses to go more places), but its a nice feeling to have it there and not have to rely on public transportation. I dont know you, but I HATE public transportation. That, and I'm really attatched to my car.

...not really...

btw, CareBear, what will you do with your car over winter break? drive it all the way back east and all the way back to UCLA in all of that rain and snow? with all of that wear and tear on your car's tires and body, and all of the time and expense it takes to drive back and forth...all the way back east?

or will you leave it at UCLA and be without your precious car back home over winter break?

students come from the east to UCLA all of the time and manage to survive freshman year without a car !!!

I can't imagine the costs and difficulty of driving a car across the country just for Winter/Spring break... wouldn't it be better to just take a plane to/from UCLA?

Good luck finding a parking spot, and you have to be lucky enough to get a parking permit before you can worry about paying the steep price.

you don't really need a car. make friends with upperclassmen, join a student group (they'll provide transportation to their events and parties), or learn how to use the bus.

all my friends who don't have cars (most of my friends basically) do one of the above and they're getting to wherever they want to get to.

it sounds like parking permits are in limited supply.. if so, how is it based?

It's a "need based point system".

http://www.transportation.ucla.edu/students/parking/permits/about/points/index.htm

also carpools are guaranteed permits as long as they meet the carpool requirements.

what are the carpool requirements?

a few of my friends will be at ucla this fall. could 2 or 3 of us apply for a carpool, or does it have to be something like a van full of kids?

Valid Carpool Requirements

* All members must be UCLA students
* Carpool must have at least 2 members.
* Each members must fill out an applications.
* All applications must be submitted together by the application deadline.
* Members must ride together at least three days per week, Monday through Friday.
* Members must live in areas that facilitate a logical commute pattern.
* Sorry! If you live in the Residence Halls or commute from 90024, 90049 (south of Sunset Blvd. and east of the 405 freeway) or 90025 (north of Santa Monica Blvd. and east of the 405 freeway), you are not eligible for a carpool permit.

Thanks!

Now I guess I have to perfect my freewaydriving skills or leave my car at school all the time.

how do they check that requirement?

I am worried that I will not receive a parking permit.

I will be a first-year undergraduate commuter and only receive 6 points from the point system (based on location). How difficult will it be for me to receive a parking spot?
