The Catcher in the Rye

Catcher in the Rye is a classic which I absolutly loved.

It contains so many latent themes, and a pretty unorthodox and cynical perspective of life. I'm glad my school choice to introduce it in sophmore year rather then freshman since it does require a certain degree of maturity. My favorite scene definatly is the part when Holden goes to the museum. Plus, how could someone not pity Holden Caufield, hes a lonley and confused boy!

The passage where Holden talks about "eff you" signs was a life-defining moment for me.

How can you even consider TKAM better than Catcher. All I remember from TKAM was that there was a girl named Scout. Any TKAM fans I would really like to hear what was so great about this novel.

I would definetly take TKM over Catcher. C'mon...Catcher was rather dull. TKM has meaning...it deals with something that still exists today in some areas.

my favourite theme in catcher is the appreciation of childhood. most of salinger's other works deal with growing up/not wanting to grow up. its amazing. the whole catcher/cliff thing is an allegory for the fall of man - taking the fall as a metaphor, with childhood 'falling' into adulthood, and sin (loss of innocence). its good to compare with peter pan or northern lights (although i hate phillip pullman...). anyway, awesome book. in my top five:

Catcher in the Rye
The Great Gatsby
One Hundred Years of Solitude (the last paragraph...wow)
Vanity Fair
Wuthering Heights
