The CC Effect - when one believes their test scores suck and are not good, when in reality (compared to most of their peers), are above average... WAY above average.

Anyone else agree?

Anyone else agree?

Totally agree.

I think it’s healthy though, for our type of people. Being competitive with other users on this forum helps us strive to do the best we possibly can (unless you’re going through a huge procrastination phase).

Ugh…CC makes me feel horrible sometimes…some people can’t seem to value the situation your in! Especially the 4.0 2400 types that post chance threads…i hope it was a good time for you attending the same highschool, nevermind the same city, for your highschool career!!

Then they despise you once they see your 3.89-3.91 GPA (that you managed to keep at 3 diff. High schools, in 2 countries!!!),2000-2100 SAT, and only mention 3-4 ECs that you’re really passionate about, even though your list is humongous (not the typical thing you see around here with App Padders)…then they autolabel you as “non-Ivy material”… I know, “so what”, Ivies aren’t everything. Thats true. But it kinda stings, even if you dont care much for ivies.

No, sorry.

Sometimes ignorance is good.

Nah, my school’s pretty damn competitive.

Ignorance is bliss…

My two candidates:

The CC Effect: The ability to (inaccurately) predict curves on nothing but consensus.
The CC Effect: The ability to make patterns out of TV static, random digit tables, etc.

I was stoked to get a 2320 on my first SAT, since I checked the data and saw that my score was in the top ~3000 of all scores for others in my class. On CC? A 2320 hardly landed me in the top 5%. Maybe not even that high.

holy crap 3000 kids??

I try to avoid that, I just come on here because I have nothing better to do then laugh at the people who think that the only schools in the world are ivies.

Jeez

Um, considering there are like 10k spots at the top schools, you are almost guaranteed the admission to one of the tops…

Yeah, but that’s out of roughly 1.5 million people who take the test each year. So anything over 2300 lands you at roughly the 99.7th percentile. Here at CC, 2300+ is the norm for Ivy hopefuls.

Which tells you how underrepresented some groups are here…

This is pretty old. Yes, the effect exists, but it makes me want to try harder even if I know I’ll never get 2400. It’s a good thing for me.
People don’t care that they’re way above average; they have our own standards based off of their own abilities. They want to accomplish what they can.
Refrain from letting results threads/chance threads/showoff threads get to your head, and know how to recognize ■■■■■■, and this place is an amazing place to get hints, recommendations, entertainment (yes, entertainment), and advice.

The thing is, the majority of people on CC aim for top universities. While a 2000 may look awesome for colleges in general, it doesn’t even make the 25th percentile cut at most top schools. For someone who’s applying to CHYMPS/UCB/UCLA/UMich/UChicago/Duke/JHU/etc., there’s no point in comparing to people whose SAT score are not in the top few percentiles.

Yes. I am convinced that my 2200 ****ing sucks. :p

I’ve gotten a good amount of motivation and advice from this site, some things I just take with a grain of salt though.

Stellar scores (with reasonable GPA and EC) would assure acceptance at most colleges. And maybe merit $ too.

It’s only the very very top colleges where you can’t predict. And there are plenty of stories where kids with perfect or near-perfect stats get rejected from them too.

So if you have 2000+ SATs, you should be very proud! Just know that you (as well as kids with perfect stats) are not assured Ivy acceptances.

I don’t like how people here compete with one another, it makes this place less easygoing.

Yeah, this happened to me w/ my SSAT.
