the chances of foreign students.

hello everyone, i would like to know what are the chances of a foreign student in comparison with an american student of being admitted by Ivy colleges as a undergraduate student. American colleges would rather a american student even if is less good than a foreign student ? i ask myself a lot of questions because that's soon even if it remains more than a year.
Sorry for the probable misspelling. i will keep improving my english.
PS: i am french
thanks in advance

Schools like Havard have alloted only a certain amount of slots to non-US applicants. This quota makes it much more difficult because the pool of applicants is huge, and therefore greater competition and lower admissions rates.

For Harvard it’s particularly difficult because they are enormously generous in their financial aid for non-US applicants. Therefore, if accepted, it’s financially viable for near anyone on the planet. And thus the huge crush of applicants.

thank you for the answer. it’s clearer now and your second paragraph reassures me because it means that my fate is in my own hands (the tuitions fees are really expensive in america in comparison with those in france)
once again, sorry for the misspelling.

why dont you try for eccole polytechnique
is also a good university

You’re certainly right but It’s more than university what I’m seeking, it’s… I don’t know well how to explain what I’ve in mind (surely due to my dubious english) but I think it’s normal for someone to look for something new when you stay 18 years at home and you may be sure that I’m not a kind of boy who wants to party everytime or rebel against his parents but It’s important to me. it’s also important to keep studying, not for society in which we live but just for the volition of doing something in this huge world and in order to not die stupid (the most important I think). studying abroad is the best compromise between seeing the world and studying. In all case I will do all I can to integrate these universities because I think I have the abilities (My result are good and I think with work i will be able to have 800 in maths, really I’m not kidding ;)) If i cannot… We’ll see
Thank you and sorry if there are some misspellings.

Last year, foreign students (those without permanent resident status or dual citizenship) accounted for 10% of Harvard’s admits. See:
http://news.harvard.edu/gazette/story/2012/03/2032-admitted-to-class-of-16/

“Foreign citizens make up 10 percent of the admitted students. In addition, a significant number of other entering students will bring international perspectives, including 122 U.S. dual citizens, 57 U.S. permanent residents, and many Americans who have lived abroad. Together, foreign citizens, U.S. duals, and U.S. permanent residents make up more than 19 percent of the class, representing 86 countries.”
