Hello CC! I got accepted but I have two friends who got deferred. I was wondering what are the chances of 1) being deferred and 2) being accepted after deferral. If you could shed any light on this it would be much appreciated. :) Thanks!

yea i got deferred, and my schedule is

1)introduction to engineering and architecture
2)Woodworking 1
3)AP Statistics
4)AP World
5)AP Human Geography
6)AP Literature and Composition

and i live in chapel hill, NC and go to chapel hill high school. im hispanic and got deferred and the 1st 9 weeks i got a 4.667 GPA and up to my midterms i still had a 4.667 GPA and am working 25 hours a weekend, while having this schedule, at the local grocery store where all UNC students go. any chances of acceptance after defferal?

got deferred too OOS
i have 760M 690 CR 690 WR with 3.73 U/W GPA
i have good midyear grades to report (all A), what are my odds?

It is definitely possible to be accepted after being deferred... It happened to a handful of people at my school (IS, excellent public school). I don't really know how they decide. My best friend was deferred, waitlisted, and then rejected, and she finished high school with straight As. I would just work to keep your grades really high. I am really sorry I don't know exact chances or anything! The process seems kind of random to me. Can anyone help?

doughvato04 are you serious? what were your ECs and SATs like? and it couldve been a multitude of other factors such as previous academic record ( ie freshman year up till now), counselor statement, and recs

but hang in there man

to all those who got accepted like myself.... YAY FINALLY WE ARE TARHEELS

PDutchy - I am in the exact same situation! I got in but my best friend got deferred! Does anyone know the chances of getting deferred or the chances of getting in after being deferred?!?!

And stop hijacking the thread other people!

like i got 1 semester C in chemistry, all A's freshmen year, like 1 B sophomore year. and 2 C's junior year that ended up being borderline B. i have gone up throughout high school. my SAT is really weak. 1200 combined math and verbal. my GPA was 3.0 u/w and 3.7 weighted. 1 really good teacher rec, 1 pretty good. 6 AP's and 10 honors throughout HS. latin club, habitat for humanity, animal shelter club (all 4 years for each), and some other ones i cant remember.
worked 16 hrs/week since sophomore year. and working 25 hrs/week while having 4 AP's and got a 4.667.
i hate to bank on affirmative action but i thought me being hispanic would help. my dad finished elementary school in guatemala, mom only HS in guatemala. they both work as janitors for 16 hrs/day, 7 days a week. and im 1st in entire 50 of my family to go to college.

sorry that was really long. i just wanted to know if i sent my midyear grades (the 4.667) would help me get in or what my chances would be.

im surprised i even got deferred to tell the truth.

oh and my counselor rec. was good especially when i told him my life story and he wrote it the day after. people say my life and parents should be a book. and ive never been in trouble or anything or have any record of ANY sort.

sorry didnt mean to jack the thread. back to the original question:
1) being deferred and 2) being accepted after deferral.

I was deferred in-state and am wondering the same question..
1420/2120 SAT, 13 APs, 4.5W/3.3UW GPA, etc.

Thanks

deferred oos (massachusetts) with a 1460/2200, 3.4 UW GPA, tons of ec's and really good recs. ahhh lame lame lame.

deferred (IS); like doughvato - I live in Chapel Hill area (diff school) have 4.30 wt gpa, 3.6 unwt; SAT 710R, 660M, 670W (2040 combined); work 24-30 hours a week + >1000 vol hrs & plenty of extracurriculars & leadership. 9 AP's.

I don't know statistics but I know two local kids who were deferred EA and got admitted - not sure how many deferred kids get admitted regular decision.

My heart goes out to LizfromNC and Rich Hobo.
My DD is accepted, but she could easily have been one of y'all.
In state and deferred with those stats?
Heart goes out as well to all others deferred or denied. Lots of students have good friends who aren't in.
Keep working, and keep looking. You'll find the right place, or transfer in later!

Thanks for the encouragement, "purplexed."
I was thinking of sending TarHeel nation a letter informing my continued interested with an artistic supplement (music).

Any other ideas would be very helpful for me and others who have been deferred.

Hobo,
Why don't you audition for the music department and major in music? UNC is a little more kindly toward music majors with lower SAT and class ranks.

Your junior year grades and SAT are what killed you and I imagine with those grades, your class rank is below the top 25% at your high school. UNC doesn't really look much below the top 15%ile in class rank for the Chapel Hill area high school students. Unfortunately, you attend a high school full of outstanding applicants. You could move to Alamance or Chatham County and probably have a lot less trouble getting in. Additionally, you are competing with the sons and daughters of wealthy Hispanics (doctors, lawyers, faculty) who have credentials that are every bit as impressive as the non-minorities.

If only Carolina will do, consider attending one of the local community colleges for two years (it is easier to transfer from them to Carolina than the other NC four year schools). The community colleges participate in the UNC C-step- a program for low income, first generation college students and guarantees participants will graduate debt-free. Additionally, the community college transfers have been noted to perform just as well or better than the students who did all 4 years at UNC. Good Luck. UNC-A and NCSU are worth looking at too.

If I had been deferred, I would have contacted the crap out of them letting them know that Carolina is my first choice. Then I would have gotten my principal to mail them a letter about what a great kid I was (my school was small and my principal offered this sort of service for many students). I would send them excruciating details from awards I had won. I feel that if you're deferred, they are in a small way threatening rejection, and I would not be afraid to come off too strong. There's no harm in letting them know you will definitely help their retention rate stay strong. Again, I would literally email the Dean of Admissions with my interest. I'd probably even write a poem about UNC and mail it in or something. Taking inaction here is a bad idea, is my point, so I echo hornet.

hahaha sounds like what I would've done.

I've already applied for the music scholarship @ Chapel Hill and, I think I have a pretty good shot at being one of the 25 or so who gets one. I'm more into pre-med, but I guess double-majoring is a good possibility.

I tried to find the dean of admission's e-mail address, but no luck. Link anyone?

Hornet - that last two paragraphs aren't directed at me.. right?

20 percent of the deferred get in. In or out of state. good luck

Yeah I got deferred from Georgetown (my top choice), and I am bombarding them with stuff. I sent in another teacher rec, a new essay (coincidentally, it was actually my UNC short essay...), wrote a paragraph about how it was my top choice and I would definitely go if I were admitted, and I called and asked what exactly stood out on my application as reason for deferral.

It might be too much, but at least I'll have no regrets if I don't get in later (even if all this stuff is annoying, I doubt they reject people for sending TOO much stuff...)

So I would definitely recommend you do as much as you possibly can to show them why they should accept you! GOOD LUCK!
