Okay, Mount Holyoke junior here!

Mount Holyoke was the only women’s college I ended up applying to, although I toured at Smith as well. Truthfully, MHC ended up being the best school I got into, but I am dead convinced that no other school would have been as perfect a fit for me. There are certain campuses where you just walk around it and CLICK with it; as cliche as it might sound, I felt like I could absolutely fit in, in every possible way, at MHC. A big draw was also the diversity and acceptance of the MHC community, as I am a member of the queer community looking for the ability to be out and proud, and as a sheltered white girl looking for some actual exposure to other cultures.

Now that I’ve been living and breathing Mount Holyoke for two years, I’m still singing it’s praises. None of my problems have truly been associated with any of the aspects of a women’s college. I was a little worried about how I’d deal with the percieved cattiness (I’m pretty laid back about that, but other girls aren’t so much…), but I honestly believe that girls who tend toward the catty, or eventually “can’t deal with girls anymore” don’t bother applying to women’s colleges. This leaves (for the most part) only the mature, thoughtful, intelligent, ambitious, and genuinely NICE girls left!

As for anyone worried about South Hadley’s location, don’t be! While the little town doesn’t have much inside its limits, what it does have is great! To name a few fabulous restaurants that have become a fixture for my friends and me: Johnny’s (American bar & grill), Ichiban (Chinese), Autentica (Mexican), and Thirsty Mind (coffee!)! And if you crave more of a downtown feel, the PVTA is ACTUALLY as awesome as the Five-College schools make it sound (at least for recreational & social purposes–it can run a little slowly and infrequently for taking courses elsewhere on a tight schedule).
