Thanks, PackMom! D has applied for the CALS scholarship since her major is biochemistry, but they don’t let students know until late May (UGH!). We should know something about the Goodnight scholarship later this month. She is also applying for several small outside scholarships through my work and her dad’s work. She’s almost 100% sure that she’ll be headed to NC State unless Clemson comes up with a better deal.

With so many apps.,I guess they wait until late May to see which students will actually be attending.
S1 didn’t receive notification of his departmental scholarship until mid-June! His dept. was a pretty laid back group, lol. Also, he was orginally turned down for a University Merit scholarship in April (of sr. yr) and then in late May was notified that he was chosen.
Turned out the original awardee decided to go elsewhere and S was next on the list.
Late money is better than no money:)

Gentle begging can help with financial aid!

Update on our situation. I contacted several of the LACs where S was admitted. We now have four that have increased the scholarship/need aid and are in a doable range. The total expenses are well above our state options but very few state schools are as cheap as NC.

Several of the schools indicated that they appreciated that I gave them an exact amount in terms of how much money would be needed for son to enroll. We have some nice options for our son now. One more school to visit (Earlham) and this chapter will draw to a close.

Interesting info- schools will pay more to keep a top performing student. Our daughter’s aid was increased to meet full need at her school for next year. We will be living tighter than usual for the next several years. Another interesting tidbit-if your older child is still on your taxes/insurance and in graduate school, you can count them on FAFSA. Iwasn’t aware of this until recently.

More good news from the grad school/non-need-based angle…

I was awarded a GAship at a research institute very much in-line with my research interests at my TX option, in addition to my previously awarded fellowship there!

This is going to be a VERY hard decision, though I know I’m INCREDIBLY lucky to be able to make it! :)

My top school offered me a 54k grant (not including work study) out of 57k.

I nearly cried when I saw it, :'D

Can we cheer about summer money? D, a second year college student, just got accepted to a summer neuroscience research internship. Her food, housing and travel are covered in addition to receiving a $4500.00 stipend. She’s floating in the clouds and amazed at the opportunity.

Congratulations to psych! My graduate work was in also psychology and, with the teaching assistanceships and clinical internship, I finished with very little debt. My classmates were like a family and, even though there was tremendous work, I consider that time one of the happiest in my life. Good luck to you!

Is there anywhere online where I could look into financial aid for my son who is attending 2011. Thanks in advance.

Pat

OK, this is a tiny cheer…S1 got a check from his univ. in the mail last week for $75.
Called to ask what it was for. Was told it was a refund for Fall sem. It seems that after we paid Fall '09 tuition/fees, the univ. dropped tuition rate by $75. All these months later, a surprise check in the mail…tiny cheer…tutiton actually dropped…bigger cheer.

Every little bit helps, Packmom!! Congrats!! We had a credit on our account because we had to pay $$ in order to avoid a late fee before the NMS $$ arrived (its always late). Anyway, they said they would mail the refund check (which also included a few hundred dollars because my s changed his mealplan) to the address on record where the bills are sent (i.e. our home address. Did they? Nope. They sent it to my s’s school address!!! He didnt mind that one bit!!
