i already have TT_TT… lol which is why im hoping a spot in Benjamin’s class opens up. Or im gonna try 1B… idk…

Oh! Best of luck getting into Benjamin’s class! D:

I had Switkes for Chem 1B and it was a breeze for me (although, this was also after I took 1A which Schleich). It was slightly more work because of the lab, but now it’s not required, so there’s that…

If you end up with him, just go to lectures and take the notes he gives you. The tests were very manageable, and if you really don’t understand anything, go to MSI (it’s like tutoring, it’s free, and they really help) and office hours. 1B is mostly conceptual stuff, whereas 1A is more math and problem solving-based.

So to clarify, we can take 1A OR 1B? Or do we take 1A THEN 1B?

Because if I can just learn concepts, that sounds a whole lot better than doing mathematical equations for the same subject. Just wanna clear that up?

It used to be that you had to take 1A before 1B now you can chose which one you want to take first. So you either take 1A then 1B or 1B then 1A if that makes any sense

Hey, well i sent an email to Chemistry Advising and this is part of what they told me:

The sequence of material taught in our introductory chemistry
classes can be taken in various orders A-B-C or B-A-C or even
A-C-B. For the Fall you could enroll in either Chem 1A or
Chem 1B as the starting point

I wanna avoid Schleich, so I’m going to swap 1A for 1B and then take 1A in the Winter, hopefully with some other Professor. I know Switkes is teaching 1B for the Fall and it’s at the same time i would’ve taken 1A. So it all worked out ^^

Alright, so we NEED both, just doesnt matter the order, that’s all I needed to know.

I’m gonna start with 1P to get my bearings back, but then it should be smooth sailing.

BTW, the lady in the Bio advising lecture during orientation totally freaked the kids out. Saying we HAVE to study like 15 hrs a week (3 hrs a day) JUST for chemistry or bio to manage good grades. I wanted to throw a book at her. That just sounds like torture. I didn’t even study for my AP tests, and the most I studied for finals was an hour for quick review. Are the classes THAT strenuous?

^Yeah, actually. But you would be surprised at how fast 3 hours of studying goes by. You don’t necessarily have to be sitting for 3 hours straight every single day, but doing practice problems and the homework… It adds up. It’s not an easy major by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s doable if your head is in the game.

Well i’m not majoring in bio, but if the classes are that strenuous, i hope I can manage. I get distracted easily, and cant stare at an assignment for too long before I start cursing the teacher/class in general, hah.

Oh well. Thanks for the info shorts.

Is being in the ACE program helpful?

ACE is an extremely good program.
