My DD ('20) just got assigned to Little in The Choates. I have a few questions. Is the bed already raised or do we have to buy risers? Will she be able to fit a lot of under bed storage bins underneath the bed? How big is the wardrobe and dresser? Closest visitor parking lot? Any tips or suggestions regarding what she should bring (or shouldn’t!.) Thanks in advance!
The beds are not raised but they’re not uber low to the ground either. You can fit rather substantial plastic bins underneath. The wardrobe is 3 to 4 feet across, if memory serves. D’s had two drawers at the bottom. You can also put stuff on top of it. There’s a small parking area by Cohen & Bissell, and larger one right at Little, which should be available for move-in. Perfect! Thanks for your response…it’s very helpful.
Last year my son was in Cohen, also in the Choates. Although there is no closet, you will be surprised at how much fits into the wardrobe. And I concur with AboutTheSame on the ability to store a lot under the beds. My son’s bed actually had some additional built-in drawers under it, and there was still some room for plastic bins. There is a bookshelf attached to the wall, and the only other furniture in the room was the desks.
One thing for sure, make sure he has a fan! Although the weather cools off eventually, early in the quarter you might have a hot and sticky period such as we had last year when we moved him in.
^^ Oh yes. Definitely a fan!! CVS (just on the edge of “downtown”) always carried window fans.
Update. The room was actually bigger than I thought it would be (double on the ground floor.) She has plenty of room for all of her plastic storage bins under the bed. So much room that I am going to bring her more bins when I visit her in October. The wardrobe was much bigger than I expected. The under bed storage will definitely come in handy considering that the room does not have a dresser. Parking was not an issue at all and moving her in went quite smoothly. On a side note, we had a lovely weekend in Hanover. Campus was quiet and we got to eat at both Molly’s and Lou’s with a minimal wait. Now I wait for DD to get back from her trip tomorrow so that I can hear all of the details!
Where did you park? Every time we have been there we have struggled with parking
We found street parking (Main St) on Saturday night. We parked in a lot off of Main St on Sunday. To move her in, we were able to pull into the lot right in front of her dorm. Since the campus was so quiet, we didn’t have any problems. I can definitely see parking being a problem when classes are in full swing.
Parking in Hanover is always tricky. I like the so-called “long term” lot behind the BofA. A willingness to walk goes a long way. Parking at the Choates for moving in is usually not an issue, since there is that little [but big enough] lot at the back side of Cohen [access off of Choate Road via Clement].
