The city of Pomona

I could not get on campus housing, but I managed to find an apartment near Claremont for relatively cheap. Everywhere close was out of my price range (West Covina & Walnut). The problem is I do not have a car that I can use to get to school and will have to take the bus or ride my bike. I am a little wary of both. I’m hoping I can find someone who would want to share a 1 Bedroom apartment with me and drive me to school. Anyway, if I have to…well, what streets should I avoid during my “commute”?

I was thinking that the fact that it gets off at Holt or w/e and you have to wait at that bus stop…I read a ton about prostitution being a rampant thing down there as well as crime. I don’t know if I’d want to stick around there long and I know the buses are always late. Maybe I might be blowing this all out of proportion, but I do not want someone taking my stuff at the bus stop or mugging me.

Why not just buy a really cheap car?

What year are you? I thought Pomona guaranteed housing all four years. Isn’t the city of Claremont extremely safe?

I am a third year. No, I don’t think Pomona makes any sort of guarantee at all. I was put on every possible wait-list and far down the list (even though I applied early).

Yes, Claremont is safe. The problem was that I had a couple speeding tickets in May and my parents were extremely reluctant to let me drive my own car. I think I convinced them yesterday to let me anyway.

But I was generally wondering what places of Pomona are safe to explore and what are not.

Ok, so

Safe: from foothill to right before holt, Downtown Pomona (by the fox theatre, and my personal favorite), all philps Ranch, all La Verne, and Chino Hills.

Try to avoid Holt and Mission at Night.

Pomona is not the most bike friendly city (lack of bike lanes), hope this helps. Any other questions I will be happy to answer

Tell (or show you parents this comment): YOU NEED A CAR. Period. It’s not even a luxury as it’s more of a necessity in Southern California–an old clunker if necessary. Want to study late? Well… remember that the last bus leaves at ~11:00 pm. Forget the bike. I lived at the Crest in Philips Ranch and it was a mess. You need the car more than you need a computer if you live in Claremont and attend Cal Poly Pomona. A plus side, is that on the weekends you can use the Claremont Colleges facilities and check books out with your Bronco Student ID.

Why are we allowed to use their facilities? So, are you saying that I can study in their library if I want to and that they won’t care that I’m not a student there?
