At my school, I know many juniors in AP calc BC. Actually, I knew a few sophomores/freshmen who were in pre-calc honors/AP calc AB.

I am having some trouble deciding between either

UT plan II honors in premed or Chancellor's Scholarship to UPitt. IF anyone could give advice with specific reasons it would be much appreciated.

Some of you people are incredibly dense. First off, SAT scores are no indication of any year's brains. The fact you people think your chances at somecollege is somehow increased tenfold because of the decrease of the average score by 40 or whatever it is, shows your lack of intellect. Using your school as proof of the decline of the class of 2007 is also seriously deficient logic. I can definitely say the class of 2007 in my school in smarter than current seniors or sophomores. And no, I am not biased because I am a junior. The scores can be easily offset by a few people. It's not as simple as:

"OMG LOLZ!!!! LYK TEH CLAZZZ OF 2007 IS TEH STOOPID IM GOING TO HARVARD NOW LOLLLLLLL"

Anyways, another reason for the decrease in scores is a classic example of the Goldilocks principle. Last year's batch took the first year of the new SAT test. The class of 2007 took the second year's version. The SAT people are calibrating the test (especially the writing section).

I actually hadnt heard the sat score stats until about 3 minutes ago when i started reading this thread, but at my school there doesn seem to be a greater lack of interest in AP and honors classes from the 07 class. For the Ap lit class, there are only 60 students qualified which is about a 40% decrease from this years. Also, there will not even be a calc bc class at my school this year because of a lack of juniors who are able to take the class.
of course, this is just at my school, but its interesting i think that there seems to be similar circumstances across the country.

IluvAs, EVERYONE can't be "lower than average". "Average" just has a lower value, now.

And, contrary to other schools that norcalgrl reported, it seems "economically disadvantaged" schools have increased enrollment drastically. Mine has, I know, by 200% this year alone, 500% last year, and is expected to increase anywhere from 150-250% next year.

Also, lets not forget that CB did change the test format this year, and many kids may be using outmoded study options, econ disadvantaged students may have been struck REALLY hard by this, and schools overall taught to the old version of the test. So, these may be reasons for the decline.

As well, the FIRST group that took the test were really prepped for the changes, while the later groups, not so much

At my school, the class of '07 is definately below average. All the teachers and such say it all the time. Then again, about the class of
'06 they say we are one of the best classes in recent years. :)

TRANSLATION: CLASS OF 2007 IS DEE-DEE-DEE!!!:)

i don't think the problem is that the class of 2007 is less smart than any other class. at our school, it's probably one of the smartest classes we've ever had. i think the problem is that the SAT is becoming more popular. more people are taking it because more colleges want it. people aren't preparing as much. or some school are requiring that all the students take it, forcing students who would not have chosen to take the test to do it anyway.

Haha! Dude, our class is NOTORIOUS at my school for being the laziest, most unmotivated class ever! What is up with us? I didn't think it was a nation-wide thing! XD

Haha! I love Mencia! XD

At my school my class (07) is by far the dumbest class in history, I remember being made fun of for getting a 1300 as a soph, then they got their score back and they realized a 1300 does more damage than a 990, maybe 50% of my class is below a 1000.

My grade is smarter than '06.

'05 had a couple REALLY smart kids, but my grade could probably get 10-15 up in front of their 5th kid or so. So '05-'07 kinda evens out at my school.

Okay... basically 05 @ my school wasn't all that smart... then here comes 06 and we're really smart, not that bad. I mean I'm not saying that b/c thats my class year.. it's just that alot ppl here are really really intelligent. ( I'm just smart.. not intelligent like some of these honor kids)

But the funny thing is 07 @ my school is really..... how should i put this... uhmmm... they're DeE-dEe-DeE.. really... no joke....

I worry that my school has no more hope after 06 leaves (they might even consider bull dozing it over and building a parking lot right after graduation)...

retarded = class of '07

Yep..it's true.

Wow, Peter being humble. Amazing! o__o

I wouldn't say that the Class of 2007 is below average, just below the phenomenally high bar set by the Class of 2006! Personally, my school is going straight down the tubes and has been for a while. Between the classes of '03 to '10, we will have basically gotten worse every year from what I can tell (with the exception of my class, we're smarter than '05 but not '03 or '04). Anyways, this sample size pales in comparison to the nationwide SAT that shows that 2007 is just simply not as bright as 2006!!!

Sorry to change the subject again, but I have to agree with citygirlsmom for the most part on using "retarded" in conversation, especially on a public forum.

A few have made arguments that it's become a slang term, that it "doesn't have its original meaning." This doesn't mean that it is now divorced from its origin, which is certainly as a derogatory term. When people say "that's gay" or use the n-word, etc., they may not be actively thinking about the derogatory meaning but it is still there in the background. The reason these terms HAVE become slang is rooted in our society's prejudices and the acceptability of slurs to many, and this should not be encouraged.

In the case of the word "retarded," it hasn't even reached the stage where many think of it as separate from the derogatory meaning, because they certainly use it to refer to someone being stupid.

If you want to use the word in casual conversation, nobody can do anything about it. However, this is a moderated public forum, and that should be taken into consideration when posting. You wouldn't use racial slurs here, and this isn't all that different.

But, someone who is retarded is actually...mentally...stupid.

I don't think it's on the same level as racial slurs at all. To associate a negative meaning with "nigger" is problematic because "nigger" is also associated with an ethnicity and the semantic connection implies something stupid/bad about the ethnicity. Meanwhile, to say something is retarded does not deviate from retarded's usual meaning and makes no further associations(mentally deficient). It's like, "fat".

on a more topical note, the class of 2007 at my school certainly is better than 06, better than 05 and roughly the same as 04 and 03.

Wow, at my school the class of '07 is actually way smarter than '06. I like the seniors this year better, they are way more talented in athletics and EC's (almost all our clubs and sports are gonna suck next year), but our class can run circles around them when it comes to academics. Our teacher knows that our AP Lit class will beat the senior AP Lit class, and last year our AP WH class beat the % pass rate of the year before. And we had the first EVER national merit scholar qualifiers this year (me and this other girl), in the history of our school. And our SAT and ACT scores for our class are generally higher. I'm not too worried about competition from my school, however, when applying for college because barely anyone is considering anything out of state b/c of Bright Futures, and those that are might be strong academically but weak in all other areas. I guess our school is just dumb in general.

When you tell someone they're retarded, you generally mean it in a bad way, or at least are poking fun at them. This implies, at least to me and I think others, that people with the medical condition are to blame for it, or that it's a shameful condition. That shouldn't happen, that's all.
