The Class of 2024 -- Sharing, venting, discussing! MT

Just curious…after these fall auditions we are hearing yes/no/maybe pretty quickly thereafter. Are there some schools who do the same after Unifieds or for those are we waiting til March? We don’t have a yes yet…so it would be nice to have some news!

@CBSQandA and all:

Here’s a list of school notifications from last year. Things can change year-to-year, but this is a good start.

Maybe someone would like to start and maintain a new thread for the class of 2024?

It’s a long wait from Unifieds until the majority of schools notify in March. So enjoy auditions while you can! It’s so exciting while it’s all happening.

@intheburbs OK. Thanks.

Hey y’all! I’m a HS senior and I’m just scheduled my UCLA MT interview/audition!! I wanted to know if anyone can share an experience so I know what to expect? A lot of the stories on here are for the Acting program, so I haven’t seen any recent MT ones. Thank you!!

I understand that early academic decisions were released today for JMU for students that applied early decision. @KatMT did JMU send early artistic acceptances today as well, or will all of those be sent out at the same time as the regular academic decisions in Feb/March? TIA

@SingerDancerMom some students who auditioned in the fall, and were admitted to JMU academically EA, also received their artistic decision in their portal today. Many have a decision still pending until after all auditions are complete in mid-February.

The admissions portals for EA academic admits with still pending program decisions will be updated in early March. An email will be sent within the next week or so to those still pending to communicate details.

Please do not hesitate to reach out with further questions.

@HighLady8 my DD auditioned for MT program two years ago. It was one of her favorite auditions and schools. One thing to know. Admittance was dependent upon UCLA Academic acceptance. One has to get academically accepted before MT will give an offer. So even if you ace ur audition it’s tough to get admitted since #1 state school applied to…or at least it was in 2018. Lots of newspaper articles about its record applicants that year. Even with stellar ACT/SAT & GPA a tough admittance. We were out of state so that can be a factor as well. Just know odds are tough due to record applications for academic acceptance. Top California students can’t get in their own State school. Not to be a downer but we were ignorant to this fact. Academic acceptance is usually the easier part of MT process. But at this school a high hurdle due to huge # of applicants. Now a days the State MT schools can be hard in all states due to cost savings on tuition in general. But if you can snag a State School MT program and instate tuition it’s awesome. No need to go broke for a BFA degree. UCLA runs a very positive and fun MT audition. Faculty very inter-active. If memory serves me I think UCLA was more acting intensive as well. So break a leg.

@HighLady8 congrats on your prescreen pass! Here’s what I wrote last year re: UCLA: They have a great information “sesh” and really lay out the difference between BA and BFA programs. They describe themselves as a hybrid, aligned with programs like NYU and Northwestern. We know one B student admitted to acting a few years ago, but I think that was an exception rather than a rule. Last year they had a 3.5 GPA cutoff to for prescreens - at least for the MT applicants. That may have changed, but regardless, UCLA is one of the most competitive schools in the country to get into, in general, and their MT program is small. Prescreens are narrowed down to 1000 and they only accept about 10 kids for MT per year. In my D’s friend group one got in and is a current freshman (super talented and stellar student), one 3.4ish student did not pass the prescreen due to GPA, one applied to the acting program and auditioned but was not accepted and my D was waitlisted for MT - and we felt pretty good about that result, even though it was disappointing. It was a very positive experience for parents and students alike. Dress is very California casual.

@HighLady8 @Kkrazie @DramaLlama18 Is my understanding correct that there are no performance classes at UCLA for a student’s freshman year? That’s different than all other MT programs right?

So my d has passed several prescreens. Is that even a big deal given how many kids they see? Upwards of 600 is what I am told.

@DramaLlama18 Thanks for more info on UCLA! I am confused though as you keep mentioning prescreen but there really isn’t one. Although, they did require the MT supplement prior to being invited for an audition this year. I was hoping that meant they reviewed the academics prior to but maybe not. Congrats on your D being waitlisted last year as that is pretty impressive!

@jasklo passing any pre screen is HARD!! congrats…always better to get in front of the auditors…that being said there has been little correlation over the years w Pre screen success and audition success…so keep plugging away, you cant get a yes if you dont get an audition, so thats a win for sure- celebrate every win no matter how small and keep grinding!

I’ve seen some posts from previous years indicating that some schools will give offers/acceptance to students on the spot at unifieds. Has anyone seen a list of these schools? Just wondering how common it is.

My D auditioned for PACE last year during Chicago Unifieds. It was at a different hotel within walking distance. There was no space and the parents and kids were totally jammed into a few small areas. It felt like they had everybody show up all at 1:30 PM, and then they took you for your singing and monologue as you came, so get there early if possible. Unfortunately the dance call is at the end, so we were there between three and four hours.

@MommaCat @Twelfthman re: UCLA audition - true it is not a prescreen (probably, it’s actually more of an academic winnowing, because, as others have mentioned here, MT students need to be academically admitted to UCLA before they can be accepted to the theatre program. And it’s an incredibly competitive school.) Anyway, they do winnow all the applicants down to 1000 or so who are invited to audition. They do say that not every student they are considering needs to audition. Others may chime in, but I don’t know of anyone who has been admitted to MT without an audition.

re: no performance classes freshman year - I don’t remember - I can ask around if no one else chimes in here. We didn’t pay much attention to UCLA after my daughter was waitlisted and she had another offer to her dream school!

@PNWdrama My daughter did get two offers on the spot at Chicago Unifieds! One was scheduled and one was a walk-in. They were her first BFA offers and, while she ended up at another school, we were incredibly grateful to have them during the long wait through February and March, when the no’s started piling up.

@DramaLlama18 thanks for the information! Would you feel comfortable sharing the schools that gave offers? That would be such a relief to have a YES, even if the student doesn’t choose them.

@PNWdrama I’ll PM you. What say you, CC Community? I’m hesitant to share specific names because each school has their individual requirements and each applicant is so talented and unique. They may just happen to be what a school is looking for at that one moment in time. I’d hate for anyone to do an audition expecting an offer and then not get one. These offers weren’t from any of the “elite 20” schools (you know who they are) but one was solid next-tier and a great offer. The walk-in at the other school was just for audition experience and was never a serious contender.

Thank you @KatMT !! Informative as always. :slight_smile:
