"THE" CMU 2015 CHANCE Thread-- Please STOP creating New chance Threads

Very good chances I’d say! Write a good essay and do an interview to seal the deal.

An ideal example of a well rounded individual with great GPA and SAT scores. I think you have an excellent shot for CMU and maybe even a shot at HYPS.

I hate doing these chance threads, but I’d love to go to Carnegie Mellon! Keep in mind that I’m doing engineering.

GPA: 3.9 unweighted, 4.42 weighted
SAT: 2240: 720 math, 740 CR, 780 writing (I just retook with the hope of raising my math score.)
Subject Tests:
Biology - 800
Chemistry - 770
World History - 770
Math Level 2 - I messed up the timing and got a 690, so I’ll definitely retake this :
Rank: I don’t know yet, but probably top 5 or so out of 250.
AP Classes:
Sophomore - AP World History
Junior - AP U.S. History, AP Statistics, AP Physics B
Senior - AP Physics C, AP Calc BC, AP English Lang, AP Euro, AP Computer Science A
Extracurriculars:
President of Mu Alpha Theta (math honors society, I organize a lot of activities)
Cross Country (JV, and maybe varsity next year)
Ambulance Youth Corps Volunteer (and I hope to volunteer in the senior corps next year once I turn 18)
Challenger Little League (helping developmentally disabled children play baseball)
I’ll be working this summer for the county government
JSA (I think debate is a pretty exciting thing)
National Honors Society
Volunteering at a hospital one summer as a junior patient advocate

I’m a little worried, because in all honesty, my school didn’t offer much engineering-related. :frowning: And considering that’s what I want to do, it might hurt me.

Awards:
RPI Gold Medal Winner
NHS, Mu Alpha Theta (as stated above)
Some school awards, but not much else, sadly.

@bri1a4n:

CIT is never a safety, but you’re in verrrrrry good standing. I applied with similar stats and few “engineering” ECs and I considered myself a near shoo-in for CIT. A solid math II (750+) will lock up your chances, good luck applying!

ECE program is a crapshoot however, but your chances for overall admission are great.

Even if RPI isn’t on your radar-- apply, b/c the award you received will be matched by CMU if you’re admitted. CMU generally aims to match competitor institutions of which RPI is one.

guys i will be applying to MCS (hopefully majoring in biological sciences, and will be applying under ED II)

UW: 3.57
W: 4.0-4.1

  • note about GPA: my grades have had a significant upward trend:
    W GPA’s- 9th: 3.8 10th: 4.2 (w/ 2 ap’s) 11th: 4.47 (with 4 ap’s)

of Ap’s: 6 (signed up for 5 more senior year), this is one of the more challenging courses

Grades is APs: AP World-A, AP Comp Sci- B+, AP US-A, AP Lang-A, AP Chem-B, Stat-A
SAT: 2020 super scored (670 CR, 720 M)
SAT US History: 780
SAT Math Level 2: 770
SAT Biology: 780
Significant EC’s + Awards:
Founder and President of the History Honor Society
Member of NHS, Math Honor Society, and Science Honor Society
3rd Place Regional Science Fair
Internship with NASA (VASTS program)
2 month research in India in biotechnology (i will conduct my studies this summer and will apply for siemens)
Lots of hours community service at hospital

also senior year schedule: ap lit, ap comparative, ap bio, ap physics, human anatomy, ap calc ab, engineering physics 2

also does CMU superscore ACTs?

also my biggest (HUGE) drawback is that I have straight B’s in all my math classes. do u think applying to MCS would dampen the effect of the straight B’s in math because i have straight A’s in my sciences, English, and history.

btw do you guys think i would have better chances if i applied ED for HSS for the Psychology and biological sciences major. any ideas? please guys help me out!

If you’re planning to do Biopsych/psychbio, I definitely recommend you apply to HSS. Psychbio (BA) is in HSS, and Biopsych (BS) is in MCS, but the difference between the two majors is only like… four classes. So you could very easily switch into MCS as a Biopsych major and still take all the same coursework you would have taken anyways.

@mom2012and14,

Thanks. Amazing advice! I was planning to apply to RPI either way because I feel like my getting the award indicates I have a decent shot at attendance, but now I know I also have some financial aid prospects at Carnegie.

any other comments about my chances?? haha please guys

@Eaglesforlife,

I’d say it’s a reach. MCS is not as difficult in terms of admission as, say, CIT or CSC, but it’s still Carnegie.

Definitely try to improve your SAT score, and GPA if you can.

u think i stand a better chance for HSS?

Yes, definitely, considering HSS is not as selective. But you can apply to as many Carnagie schools as you want, so apply for both if you would like!

this might sound like a really dumb question but is CMU one of those colleges where essays can either make or break you? i was wondering that b/c i know some colleges that are purely number based and I am really good at essays sooo i was just curious. also is CMU the kind of school that loves students visiting and applying to ALL scholarships b/c it shows their commitment to the school (i know that WUSTL is, soo i was just wondering)

and also jus for numbers sake ( i know this doesn’t mean anything, but please) could you give me a % of getting accepted ED for either HSS or MCS.

HSS score ranges are: CR:630-730 Math:640-740 Writting:630-730 GPA:3.59…I am in all these ranges and in the upper for some of them, am i reading too much into the numbers here?

Carnegie is big on numbers. Essays are important, but I think they value scores more than some schools do.

Mind chancing me?
