The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) Quick Q

Hey all.
I was recently accepted to TCNJ (The College of New Jersey). I applied for math/teacher education, and they’ve offered me $2,500/yr + a laptop, out of state (i live in NY).
I’ve already been accepted to Bing, Albany, and am waiting to hear from Cornell, Lehigh, and UDel.

What does everyone think about TCNJ academically? They aren’t ranked liek others since they dont offer PhD’s, but they are ranked at the top for master’s granting schools. Barrons just ranked them a “most competitive school”.

I have good stats: 1390SAT top 10%, good EC’s, etc.

The campus there is gorgeous, and i saw it in the rain.

Is it a good school, or would I be better of at a larger university, ie: Binghamton?

Thanks.

If you are going for math/teacher ed it's a good place to go. It's easily the best of the NJ state colleges, also I'd say ahead of Rutgers in selectivity. Why spend the $ on Lehigh or Cornell if you want to teach math? If you were going into engineering or business then it would be different. TCNJ's roots are as a teacher's college, although it's evolved into a selective small "university".

At least here in nj it has a very good reputation. A lot of smart kids go there because it's inexpensive (relatively).

TCNJ is excellent for Education degrees. I believe that is its best dept. Also a very pretty campus, and a lot of state-of-the-art classrooms. As far as small vs. large, that's more of a personal preference.

When I think of TCNJ, I think of bright students that either didn't get into their reach ivy and decided not to spend the $ since it wasn't their top school, or people who weren't willing to spend the $ either way. You'll be successful there, and get a good education. It really just depends on how much you care about impressing other people.

thanks everyone. All that sounds great.
I definately see how it'd be a great place for math w/ education. I want to be able to be a math teacher (have masters, plus training), while also obtaining a math degree which is good for many other things (actuary, etc.)

That all makes sense if you were talking about in-state tuition,but...I would not think it is worth out of state tuition, given that you have already gotten into good SUNY campuses, which will be cheaper for you as a New Yorker and enjoy similar reputations.

TCNJ has the highest standards of all public colleges in New Jersey. Yes, way higher than Rutgers. TCNJ is also noted for their Education Program. You can easily spend three times as much on an inferior education at many private schools.

Excluding Princeton, but including ALL other private and public NJ colleges, TCNJ is the is Jersey's top college. Lots of smart kids.
