The college or the program?

Do people get highered in pr right out of college or is it something you do latter

Smaller companies or institutions might only have one PR person, or the PR person is a member of the communications team. Large global companies would have a larger group of dedicated PR people. And then there are PR agencies who take on PR responsibilities for businesses. Internships are an imperative. Small companies often put interns in position to “assist” the PR person and/or communications team. So yes, you can enter PR right out of college. A favorite stomping ground for young PR people to hone their skills is with non-profits. It is a “must” these days to have some social media skills. A good way to get handle on what PR people do and/or what job descriptions look like, starting salaries etc. is to look at websites like IABC (International Association of Business Communicators) or PRSA (Public Relations Society of America). Writing is a must, so when in college get involved in the activities where you can hone your writing skills. For the most part it’s still very much a start at the bottom and work your way up industry.

So much will change once you start college. You will learn about different majors and may change your major. Go with the school that most fits your idea of a good college. You will do your best where you are happiest and have no regrets about “the other school”. You can meet your career goals via more than one path- look at the total college picture, not just one facet of a major.
