I just spent the last 3 hours of my life trying to sign up for SAT IIs. I qualify for a fee waiver; but, my high school ran out. There is nothing I can do but to pay with my own money. I look at the schools available and there is one a decent but fair distance away. However, when I try to confirm it, it would say not available even though the sign up clearly says "Seat Available." I tried signing up for the school for 2 hours with no avail (I thought someone has chosen the school but did not pay yet and it was being held for 20 minutes).

My only other choice is at another school a huge inconvenience away. Finally after giving up trying to register the school of my choice (even though it has seats), I gave in and registered for the school that is hours away.

After paying and confirming I want the faraway school, I return to my SAT homepage where it allows me to change test details. So out of curiosity, I clicked change test center to see if I can choose the school I wanted. And there behold, I could! But for a fee of $24!

WHAT IS THIS BLASPHEMY?!

I tried to change it to the school I wanted before I confirmed my order and it would not let me (I tried on 3 different browsers and they all said full try again when it was clearly listed as available). Then less then a minute after placing my order, the school becomes available and I'm able to change my testing center to that if I pay an addition $24?
I find that hard to believe a extra spot was created in the 30 seconds it took navigating the page.

Has anyone else experienced this? The CollegeBoard does not seem satisfied until it has milked every last penny it can from you.

I, of course, am not going to pay the unjustifiable $24 to change my test center. I am debating whether or not to call customer service tomorrow and make a big debacle.
(How hard is it to change an electronic tag before official registration even ends? It certainly does not cost $24)

Calling and complaining might not work when it deals with money they are heartless. Ask to speak with someone from finances if you can if not explain your situation in it’s entirety and if that does not work tell them you plan to have your counselor call, of course a bluff, but it might work. Also take their number they usually say it when they answer.

Thanks for your advice, I’m going to call early in the morning when they open at 8. My school doesn’t allow the use of cellphones so I’m going to try to make the call before I go in. But I have a feeling it’s going to be either a long call with lots of hold music and no progress or a very short “no too bad” hangs up call.

The Collegeboard just likes to screw people over. I’m glad that it’s my junior year and all I have left if the SAT IIs and my APs. I never want to deal with them ever again.

I mean I don’t have a problem paying the $24. I just don’t think it’s fair, the school I wanted isn’t even that close to my house but it is a lot less work getting there. If it was the school right next to me I would pay the $24.
But honestly, I feel cheated right now by being barred from signing up to a school that has seats but does not let anyone pick it because it is reserved for those who pay an extra $24.

Well I didn’t call them but I emailed them and after long messages back and forth with me stating the same thing over and over. They finally moved my complaint to the “Escalated” customer service section.

I hope this doesn’t sour my relationship with the CollegeBoard even more…The amount of power they have is ridiculous.

I think it’s bad enough that ONE SAT II on ONE day is $31… and only $10 of that is for the exam itself. Good job on standing up for yourself! I really do find your situation to be outrageous. I’m taking just the Bio test on June 4, and I was not happy when I realized that the testing center choice is rather limited.

The only thing I think is that bad is that my friend threw up shortly before the AP Bio exam (it actually wasn’t nerves). She had paid the money for the exam, but there are no make-up days. Therefore, next year she will have to take the exam, and yes… pay for it again.

@liveforscience: What? The make up exam for Biology is Friday, May 20. Tell your friend to ask your AP coordinator to order a make up exam before this Sunday. The cost is free, since your friend was sick.

Well I did email the CollegeBoard and got several complaint tickets. I explained my situation several times to different reps and they all sent me back an email asking for personal information. So I sent and they replied saying they put my complaint into the escalation department and I should wait 5-7 days for them to contact me.

Well I waited and they did call and leave a message telling me to call them back on my home phone. I called back but nobody is ever there to answer. I left several messages and called almost everyday at various hours but nobody is ever there. I even told them when is the best time to call me and call me back at that time. They never did anything after that. I keep calling but it goes straight to voicemail after 3 rings.

Gah, I officially give up trying to contact the Collegeboard. It’s impossible.
