The Collegeboard SAT Question of the day

<a href="http://apps.collegeboard.com/qotd/answer.do%5B/url%5D">http://apps.collegeboard.com/qotd/answer.do</a>

This question was so easy why did 62 percent get it wrong?????????

because they answered 9. instead of just listing the DIFFERENT combinations, they just did 1+4, 1+5, 1+6, 2+4, 2+5, etc., and some of those combinations equal the same answer. they were just lazy and counted it like that instead of doing the simple math

the simple way of doing this is just adding the smallest value together which is 1 + 4 = 5, and the largest values which is 3 + 6 = 9, from column to column. Then you simply count the integers from 5 to 9 inclusive, which is 5 integers, so five different sums. The answer is E. This works only if the numbers in the columns are consecutive integers.

I don't think "lazy" would be the right word.
I don't think they were thinking of the word "values" throughly. But, I got that one wrong =(

Sorry, but not everyone is as good as you.

I clicked on the link and it said I got it wrong, when I hadn't even typed in anything. Bastards.

akahmed, great advice. Thanks.
