The Collegian--UR's online newspaper

The Collegian ? University of Richmond Student Newspaper ? News, Sports, Features, Opinion

Here's the link to the University of Richmond's online newspaper. It's a good way to get a feel for what's going on at the campus.

Check out the "news" section for Police Reports. Check out the "opinion" section for students OP-Ed's. Read through the entire thing once a week if you're interested in UR. Good info about a wide range of things--events, alumni updates, sports, news, etc.

You can do the same for any college you're interested in. Just google and find the college's online newspaper.

Good post NY! I read The Collegian at least once per week now that my daughter is attending. One of the reasons we love this school is the safety on campus. Look at the police reports and compare to other schools. While not crime free, it is so much better than many other schools.

The beauty of the link is that people can read the info and form their own opinions.

I never thought of searching them out and reading them until after my kids were all ready in college. So, I thought I’d pass on the idea to other parents. It’s fun to read through all of the different sections of the issues. As I mentioned before, it’s easy to google the online newspapers for most colleges.

Wow. Just checked the Collegian. Now they’re up to 10 on campus assaults in a month’s time.

“Two University of Richmond students were assaulted during the early morning hours of Oct. 3, making a total of 10 on-campus assaults reported in one month.”

nysmile, I was shocked when I read about that last week. Talk about scary, and crazy unusual for UR.

By the strictest of definitions, yes, there have been a lot (seemingly caused by the same group) of assaults. Always single targets, always after 1am.

While scary, I’m just thankful no one has required medical attention. The school has done well in communicating the issue and increasing patrols on campus.

[11 student cars vandalized, $3,000 in damages | University of Richmond Collegian ?
11 cars vandalized in one night.

My daughter’s best friend’s car was one of those. Why are you always so happy to report bad news on the school, NYSmile?? There is no question there is a single group of kids responsible for these incidents, and hopefully they will be caught. And soon.

Where do you see happiness in my posts? I simply went online to read this week’s issue of the Collegian and was surprised to see such a terrible act of vandalism inflicted on student’s vehicles.

I also noticed that the Safety Shuttle is now offered to male students. This a very good move on the college’s part. This change appears to be directly related to the high number on on-campus assaults reported since the start of Fall 2010.

Hopefully, they will be able to identify and catch the perpetrators soon.

Reread your opening post. You give the link for the school newspaper and then conveniently mention we should all check out the police reports. A week later you post “wow, just checked…10 assaults in a month’s time!” and then on the 18th you post another “11 student cars vandalized!” with a link to the article. So, NCSmile, you tell me: why do you always post negatives about the school? Did you put in the link for the opening of the new Weinstein International Center last week? Or a link to the opening of the brand new football stadium? Or the addition to the Robins School of Business? You get my point. No school is perfect, but according to our daughter, UR is pretty close, and she is having a fabulous experience with excellent professors and many, many extracurricular opportunities. She’s headed off to UPenn for Model UN in a few weeks, is active in APO (Service Fraternity), has her own radio show with two others, joined a sorority last year (which she loves), and more. All that and also made the freshman honor society last year. We’re happy. She’s happy. The CDC is working to help her find an internship this summer. It’s all good, and I want prospective students and parents to know that UR is a GREAT place to be, in spite of police reports, vandalism, etc. that unfortunately occurs at ALL schools these days.

Investor - my daughter is a freshman at UR and, like your daughter, absolutely loving life! She has joined a rock climbing club and a ball room dancing club. She has nothing but positive comments about her new home. I think the campus is as safe as an open campus can be and I am less concerned about her safety at UR than I would be at most other schools.

^PAV, please reread the original post. It was posted on 9/23/10. Yes, I mentioned to check out the “news” section for Police Reports. The reason—because many parents don’t know that weekly Police Reports are available to read. Whether researching U of R or any other college, I feel that parents should know that such information is available.

I also mentioned to check out the “opinion” section. It’s nice to read what students have to say about a variety of topics.

I also suggested to read through the entire “Collegian” because it provides good info on a wide range of things----events, alumni updates, sports, etc.

What is the problem? You’re taking one 6 word sentence of the original post rather than reading the sentence in context and including the total main idea of the post. The main purpose of the original post is to make people aware that they can go online and read online editions of newspapers from colleges.

Regarding my 10/6/10 post–I simply went online to read a new edition of the online Collegian and one of the headlines was the story about the 10 on-campus assaults since the start of the semester. I was shocked and because this was an abnormal spike in on-campus assaults, I passed the info on to others so they could go back to the link in my original post so they could read about it themselves. As the parent of a prospective student or current student, wouldn’t you want to know such things?

Regarding my 10/18/10 post—I simply went online again to read the current edition of the Collegian. Right there, on the front page of the link, was the story about the 11 Cars being vandalized. I was very surprised. So, I made a comment and included the link so others could read the story for themselves. I also made a comment that U of R has decided to expand the Safety Shuttle service to men in response to the increased number of on-campus assaults (if you read the article, the school mentions this as the reason why they now offering the service to male students). I commented that this was a great idea.

Do you honestly think that my original post was to bash the school? It was to inform parents that U of R (as well as most colleges) have an online newspaper and it’s full of info that may be of interest to them-----news, police reports, alumni news, sports, opinions, events, etc. Do you think that on 9/23/10 when I posted the link to the Collegian that I had magical powers and knew that a few weeks later, U of R would be hit with an unusual rash of on-campus assaults and vandalism?

Yes, all colleges have their fair share of scary and criminal things going on at any particular time. It’s not unique by any means to U of R.
The positive stuff is always easily accessible to prospective students and parents. My purpose was to inform parents that they can find a wide range of info (good and bad) about a campus by reading the online editions of various college newspapers.

smile, if you’re so willing to help out prospective parents with the thought of checking the school newspapers (which is a great idea – and something I did when on visits), then why hadn’t you shared that elsewhere?

There had been a couple of assaults prior to 9/23, which is why your first post was made. You may play coy, but you do take pleasure in UR not being shed in the best light. You’re never around for good news about the school.

I think it’s amazing you have such an infatuation with the school, despite openly admitting that your son hated it, that you still read the newspaper as often as you do.

Amen Spiders05! I have been reading NYSmiles posts for over two years now and anyone can see right through this picture. I do find it sort of an odd obsession to be checking out the school newspaper as often as he does, considering he is not an alum nor does he have any children at UR. Coy, yes. But we’re smarter than that!!! PAVenturer, we have chatted a bit before about UR and I am so happy your daughter loves it. I hope she loves her classes. That is the best part of the news we hear from our daughter…she absolutely loves the subjects and the professors. The day they got a “slot” for their own radio show was so exciting for them! We visited last week with our second child (he’s a senior in HS) and it was the opening dedication to the Weinstein Int’l Center. I was just blown away by the building. We were on campus with a tour guide and walked into Jeter (Science building, I believe) and there was our daughter, sitting at a table, work everywhere, studying! She couldn’t have set that up if she tried, LOL. She was obviously embarrassed when in the middle of the tour she was cheerfully greeted by her father, brother, and me. BTW, her “take” on the vandalism etc is that it is rumored to be a group from outside campus. She says she no longer walks home from the library alone, nor do others, and she takes advantage of the shuttle. If there are two or more, they walk. She states she still feels very, very safe. PAVenturer, PM me if you have any questions about life at UR. THere is so much to do there!!

When something is out of the ordinary, it stands out as in the case of what has happened at U of R this semester. I passed on the info and people can do with it as they like.
The link to “the Collegian” is on this thread. People who previously didn’t know about it, can now easily access the newspaper and find out all kinds of things about the school. I maintain that this is a very good way to find out about a wide range of things going on at the school and can be a valuable tool when researching the college. The same goes for other colleges. Search for their online newspaper and read through it for a few weeks. It helps to get a better overall picture of any school.

So it was just coincidence that you posted the link after issues arose? And you constantly bring up incidents occurring, but not what the school is doing (for example, officials, officers and students took a 2.5 hour walk around campus last night to look for problem spots)

And you haven’t posted links to any other school’s newspaper in any of the general forums?

It’s funny – when I don’t care for something (similar to how you dislike UR), I usually stay away from it. But you find yourself on the website for the school, and keep coming back to this forum. It’s interesting how people are programmed different ways.

(These forums need “Like” buttons)

Smile, where ya at? They made two arrests in the vandalism case…it’s on the Collegian’s site so I assumed you read it.

Am I going to have to pull all of you apart? Seriously, guys, after having what’s his name…URDefect? Was that it? bashing UR, NYSmile (and whoever else decides to post…) pointing at the legit issues the school has seems inconsequential.

Besides…these sort of things are the problems that parents and students aren’t likely to hear about on a tour or on the web site if they don’t make a point of digging deeper–picking up a paper, asking pointed questions about safety, etc.

@Spiders05 – Arrests? Now I have to go read The Collegian. I’m heading down for homecoming tomorrow so I am pleased to hear they are making progress!

“And you haven’t posted links to any other school’s newspaper in any of the general forums?”

^Re: the above statement by Spider05.

Over the years, I have indeed posted links to articles from other college newspapers on a variety of threads on CC. Here are a few of them:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/803308-yale-student-found-dead-his-suite.html?highlight=yale+daily+news

I posted this thread to give prospective parents and students another avenue for them to find information rather than simply relying on info obtained by the admission’s office. By posting the link to the newspaper, prospective parents and students are now aware that they have an additional source of information at their fingertips. They can read through all of the sections of the paper at their leisure and form their own opinions. It is a source of information that may help parents find answers to things that they never even thought to ask. It’s always easy to find the obvious positive things going on at any campus. As with any campus, there are also negatives. Online college newspapers are a great source of info. They usually include a broader range of information than what is normally found during the typical Information Sessions and tours.

As Spiders05 mentioned, there is now a follow-up article with news of the arrests of
2 University of Richmond freshmen in regards to the car vandalism. This is great news and if found guilty of the crime, they will have to pay the price for their actions. Now that the link to the Collegian is easily accessed via this thread, others can look to it for updates on this story as well as new info on events, news, alumni info, sports, opinions, etc.
