The Common Application Thread

Ask & answer questions about the CommonApps (CA)!

I'll start:

When electronically submitting the CA, how do you sign?
What is the "title" of your guidance counselor?

You type your name, and that counts as a signature.

Title is Dr., Mr., Mrs., Ms., or Rev. It's a drop-down menu.

how do you write those "why do you apply to school ABC" short essay (300 words) questions in the school supplements?

Do you just say why you like it in standard essay format, or do you have to go narrative and write a short story about life story (like those big 500 word essays)?

I would think either of them. Just say generally why you would want to attend said school or most specifically if you have some story or little anecdote to share that got you interested in said school. I figure both work fine.

I have an app fee waiver from Rice. I want to use the common app (easier essay topics). How do I submit without paying?

I think there's an option to show that you have a fee waiver.

How soon should I be working on the essays and asking for teacher recs? Is months in advance too early?

For the essay as early as you like is good. It gives you more time to edit, and you can add more thoughts as they come along. Teacher recs most people do in the fall at the start of senior year I think. As long as the teacher knows you well and can put in a good word for you then its fine.

you can type your signature??? can i do that if i fill out the form electronically and then submit it by mail?

also, the space above "title" asked for Dr. Mr. Ms. already. why do they ask it again?

most schools have the early decision date of November 1
if you take subject tests in october will those scores be available to send with early decision application?

can you send them after the deadline?

the final testing date for the November ed deadline is the november SAT sitting.

FauxHoax,

It says "Counselor's Name (Title - First - Last)". There are three data-entry fields above that. The first is a drop down menu (over the word "Counselor's"). That's for title. the next field (over "Title - First - Last") is where the first name goes. The field to the right of that is where the last name goes.

A rather silly question about mailing supplements:
Some of the supplements say that they need to be sent in an envelope provided by the school, but then again, if you're getting the supplement from online, you obviously won't have an envelope... will a store-bought envelope sent to them be okay? Because I'd hate to spend a fortune on postage and then have everything returned to me due to a silly envelope problem. ><

And just for the record: All recs must be sent to the school directly from the teacher, yes?

Umm, well I used basic manilla envelopes for all my schools, and I didn't get anything sent back to me. Also, your teachers do not necessarily have to mail there own recommendations. I know that for me, that in our school everything must be sent in one mailing so application, recs, and all so it's not mandatory that the teacher mail his/her rec.

Correction to above /\ Nov SAT tests will be TOO LATE for EA/ ED applications. The scores aren't sent to the colleges until a few weeks after the test date. If you are applying EA or ED all application material should RECEIVED by the admissions office BY NOV 1. Otherwise you greatly reduce the chances your application will even be considered.

I actually have a friend who got into Princeton ED last year: his last SATs were the November sitting.

Jimmy, I heard that it'll take a bit longer for College Board to send out scores from now on.

It's a gray area.

I'm still deciding on EA or RD.

Very confusing.

For some schools, it's okay, for others, it's not. Check websites.

Umm well there's so much debate as to what grades the teacher recommendations need to be from, so I can't really give you a definite answer on that either way. As to the same subject, there's nothing against having teachers who teach the same subject though I can tell you it is much more advantageous for you to get one history/english/foreign language teacher and the other be a math/science teacher to represent yourself as more well rounded.

November scores USUALLY get to schools on time for EA/ED, but there's no guarantee. With the new results taking an extra few days, if your score comes late, you're probably screwed.

menloparkmom - do you live near Menlo Park Mall? Haha.

Does anyone know if my first semester grades of senior year are going to be calculated into the GPA (for regular action)? If so, when are they supposed to be sent?

Can you apply online with a fee waiver? Does anyone know how that would work?

thanks
