any other opinions guys?

looks like a pretty great app. If your school as rigorous and hard to get into as youve mentioned then i would think it would be one of the top international schools hence many of the colleges you listed would know how tough it really is so gpa might not hurt you has much. Other stuff looks pretty great. Im guessing your an engineering major? maybe business. but youll get into 1 or 2 ivies im sure and great chances for the rest.

actually…an economics and political science double major.

i’m looking for advice on which way to narrow my list.

which schools would any of you cut?

You are most certainly an extremely strong contender for all the schools above. The Ivy’s, as always, will be a “reach” but at least your chances are probably higher than the average applicant.

For most of those LAC’s, you have a >50% chance of getting in IMO.

Alright guys, I guess a revised version of my college list is in order. Please chance me specifically (as far as possible for each of these schools)

Columbia
Yale
Brown
Penn
Amherst
Williams
Chicago
Cornell
Claremont McKenna
UC (B/LA/SD)
Vassar
Oberlin
Northwestern
NYU Stern
Johns Hopkins
UMich

A 3.7 on a 5.0 scale is going to hurt you more than most people here are saying.

Columbia - Reach
Yale - Rejected
Brown - Reach
Penn - Reach
Amherst - Low reach
Williams - Match
Chicago - Low-reach/Match
Cornell - Reach
Claremont McKenna - don’t know, probably a safty
UC (B/LA/SD) - B is reach, LA is high match, SD is match
Vassar - Safty
Oberlin - Safty
Northwestern - Match
NYU Stern - Match
Johns Hopkins -Match
UMich - Match

Williams, Johns Hopkins, and Northwestern are not matches.

Whoa. Very impressive stuff you’ve got going there. Are you from SAS or a local JC?

Oh wait… I’d guess you’re from NUSHS, seeing “specialised magnet high school”. I wouldn’t say magnet… but i guess it’s okay to label it as such.

@pieisthebest: thanks for the honesty but those are some of the most unconventional chances i’ve been given.

(a) oberlin and vassar are safeties? why?
(b) williams = match?

(also, tip for the future. safety is not spelly s-a-f-t-y)

LAST BUMP…here we go.

come on guys, any more advice/chancing?

People are definitely not giving you a realistic picture. Let a desi brother give you a more realistic picture. Not applying for aid is definitely increasing your chances substantially:

Columbia ED High Match with the early decision
Chicago EA Match
Cornell Match
Georgetown Match
Brown Reach
Michigan Match
UPenn Low Reach
Yale Reject
NYU Stern high match because of ED Wharton/Ross/Sloan rejects
Northwestern High Match

My sincere advice for you would be to stick with Columbia ED. I think you can make it since you are not applying for Financial aid, and you are applying ED. Stick with that.

why would not applying for FA help so much? don’t tons of people NOT apply for financial aid?

Not in the current recession.

Most of you guys are really underestimating how big of a factor that 3.7/5.0 GPA is going to affect the OP’s chances… That’s the equivalent of like a 3.0/4.0 … and even though the OP obviously goes to a very good school, the GPA is a real killer.

for Columbia ED… 3.7/5.0 GPA + international applicant + Asian = no.

Most internationals need aid, so one who doesn’t gets a boost because he provides both diversity and tuition.

Srrinath, as many people have noted, you must provide context with that GPA. Are you in the top 10 % of your class? Top 5%? Top 5 students? GPA carries much more weight than test scores in US admissions, particularly at the top.

Also, you have a broad range of large and small schools, urban and suburban. If you can decide on environment, that will help narrow the field.

Since you are interested in IR, I suggest ONLY if your GPA is good for your school:

Columbia
Brown
(Add Princeton)
Chicago
Georgetown
UC (B/LA/SD)
Vassar
UMich

You need some likelies if you really want to study in the US. Look at:

American University
Boston University

in context all it means is that:

a) i did REALLY bad freshman year
b) i go to a really tough school

You did “really bad” freshman year, but how did you do for the next two? What would your GPA be if you took out freshman year?

Upward trends are great, and your test scores show that you can master difficult material. But if your sophomore and junior grades are spotty (say, the US equivalent of all As and a couple of Cs), then you may not be able to overcome your freshman grades.

like i said sharp improving trend. for anyone who is curious:

Freshman GPA: 2.5 out of 5.0
Sophomore GPA: 3.4-3.5 out of 5.0
Junior GPA: 4.2 out of 5.0
Senior GPA: (still ongoing) 4.6-4.7 out of 5.0

And bear in mind this is in a very tough school.

I think you’re in at Michigan, Vassar, Georgetown, and Northwestern
high chances would be Brown, NYU, and Columbia
