I am really torn between the new south campus and pierce. I have heard nothing but possitive feedback from pierce students, but the “jail cell” small rooms make me a little uneasy since im usually a person who caries with a lot of stuff. The south campus sounds great, but I would like a sense of tradition and house pride present in my dorm experience, something that the new dorm might be lacking. As of right now, my choices are 1) south campus 2) pierce. Any suggestions for choice #3? (Looking for a social dorm, w/ good amount of parties, comfort would be nice as well) IS the south campus pretty much a sure thing to get?

Well if you want parties…I hear Max P is good for that as well. Also bigger and more comfy than Pierce.

I’m torn…BJ vs. Breckinridge. Residents, go at it.

I really wanted South Campus since it’s big new and sounds like it’ll turn out to be fun social dorm. But when I visited yesterday, it just wasn’t for me. So now I have Max P as my first choice (which I loooved), South Campus second and Pierce my third choice.

Kool Kat, if you’re looking for a good dorm, I would strongly recommend Max.

monteyy how is south campus exactly?

andreeab – It looks pretty cool from the outside. It’s big and pretty and right next to BJ. I didn’t really like the whole idea of having to cross the midway to get there, it seems too far and doesn’t really feel like you’re still on campus. At least that’s the impression I got when I walked to it from main campus. What else did you want to know?

Monteyy- Thanks for the suggestion, I’m looking into Max P. too now.

But when you say you visited the south campus, I imagine you only went on a tour right? (since it opens until the fall). It will be interesting to see how it really turns out once its taken over by the shorelanders, first years, etc. Did you also manage to visit Pierce while you were there. Given that we are considering the exact same dorms, your insights are extremely useful to me.

NotAVirtue, there are some Breckers on the FB Chicago '13 group who could give you more info.

Kool Kat - my main quarrel with South Campus is how far away it is from campus. I’m already dreading the winter and walking across the midway doesn’t seem like much fun. What I did when I visited was simply just take a stroll from the bookstore to south campus, and it was a goo 10 minute walk, maybe more.

No, I didn’t go look at Pierce, which I kind of regret cause I might even now change it to my second choice.

I also really wanted to sneak into Max but I felt like SUCH a creeper asking somebody if they would let me in. And a 40 year old man tagging along with me would have made it that much more shady.

I’m glad you find my input helpful! I keep flipping back and forth between all three of the dorms so it’s kind of an issue.

I’m a first year in Broadview. unalove gets it exactly right – my single with its private bathroom is fantastically large for a UChicago room, and the dorm is really quite subdued in comparison with other dorms (or so I’ve heard).

Pros:
Private bathrooms + spacious singles. Nothing more to say.
Pretty quiet. No hall parties. About the worst you’ll get is someone talking on the phone at midnight.
Very close to the bus stop for the 6 and the X28, which will take you straight downtown.
The college students you’ll find here are anything but typical.

Cons:
Too damn far from campus. The dorm seems to have a low retention rate for this reason; it’s such a waste of time to have to commute.

My favorite dorms are Snell-Hitchcock and Burton-Judson, the former for its proximity to everything, the latter for its incredible dining hall.

sucks. I was glad to hear they were getting rid of it. I stayed there overnight for this week’s program, and although the personal space is a draw, the building is too disconnected from campus. And the jokes from my hosts regarding an email concerning a local citizen fatally shot 7 blocks away (along with 3 injured friends) didn’t help me sleep any easier at night.

It’s sad they had to do away with it because of the history of the building, especially Capone’s time there. However, there’s no point in putting money into improving it, and the campus is already pretty spread out without the extra distance added by the dorm.

^It just depends on what you’re looking for. I thought Shoreland was pretty awesome (i stayed overnight there a little while ago).

Someone should plot all the dorm sites on a map, assign a “weight” to the number of students at each, and find out where the center of gravity was this year with Shoreland in play and where it’ll be next year with Shoreland out and the new South Campus in play. Just an exercise in demographics. Off the top of my head I see a big shift.

Well, there will be about 1,100 undergrads living south of the midway next year…

south campus isn’t TOO far away. i stayed at BJ last night, which is also across the midway, and the distance to classes isn’t too bad. then again, the weather was phenomenal this week and i can’t say i have any experience closing the distance in the dead of winter.

i really liked BJ - the community at my house was great, and there was a good mix of different kinds of people. the drawback would definitely be the facilities - the common lounges were pretty small, and the showers are basically concrete blocks with curtains. i’m picking south campus as my first choice, with BJ as my second because i really did love my house.

So I’m really conflicted about what dorm to request. I definitely want a more social dorm, but I’m not a huge partier, not really because I frown on the types of activities that might go on at college parties (although I don’t really drink or anything…) but because I’ve never particularily enjoyed large parties. I don’t care about location very much. I just want a dorm with more “normal” people…does that make sense???

Any recommendations?

Oh, and I’m not overly thrilled about the possibility of a single. I’m kinda shy as is, and I think a single would not help me socially adjust to college life.

Breckenridge seems like a good option for you- they have a good, if insular, social life, no parties, and there is a decent chance of getting a single there.

I just read my post again, and I realized how many double negatives I used. Just to make something clear, I don’t want a single.

just wanted to respond to something i saw earlier with my own experiences from visiting overnight

this could not have been further from my experiences. i was not assigned to stay overnight in pierce, but i ended up crashing there because i loved the people (and I wasn’t a huge fan of BJ). the people seemed crazy close and like they were having a really good time

that said, the facilities at pierce were not at all impressive. i put down max P for the more central location, and i’m a fan of their architecture. hoping for a good social scene

anyone know the chances of getting BJ if I turned in the form April 8? I was an EA admit and I had heard there was some kind of EA perference date? is that true? thx!
