The Completely Unofficial 08-09 Chicago Dorm Guide

i also turned in the form on april 8 as an EA admit. i think it shouldn’t be too hard for me to get into max with that

BJ isn’t that popular anymore (according to Dean O’Neill). You shouldn’t have any problem getting in.

As a potential incoming freshman (haven’t sent anything in yet – I know it’s getting late), I was wondering if people could tell me more about the dorms without me having to read the whole page.

When I visited UChicago I only got to see two of the dorms: Pierce and Max. I felt like I had gone through the worst and best sides of the spectrum.

To explain, I’m really looking for nice dorms (especially the rooms!). I know Pierce is supposed to be close and all, but community bathrooms did not appeal to me and the lounge and stuff I was shown was pretty dingy overall. I just didn’t get that great an impression. Max on the other hand was marvelous!

I want private bathrooms (a must! community bathrooms and me just don’t mix) and preferably space to move around in. Which undergrad dorms fit this and what else should I know about them? (Are the rooms doubles, singles, etc?)

Max, Broadview (singles+private baths), and South Campus are probably your best bets for that bathroom situation.

This is going to sound a little silly now, but I really don’t think your quality of life is going to be hindered or helped by the bathroom situation. You have undoubtedly used public bathrooms before, most of the time they are empty, and it’s not like you are going to be naked in full view. I think you’re better off choosing a dorm based on other living habits.

I’m really unsure whether I want to live on south campus next year. I’m 1 and 2 with max and south but unsure which will have a stronger community. I want to live in a newer dorm, I hated bj. I really want to have a very social dorm! More so than any other request probably. I realize that living on south is a big hassle and in order to go to classes/parties you have to cross midway and all. I’m just wondering if anyone can see how these huge dlrmd could effect this? Will there be less pressure to leave south? Or will everything be centered around the quad where classes, frats, and off campus parties are at?

Also I’m playing baseball so it would be nice to be by ratner. Any athletes?

I’ll probably look at football this upcoming year.

If I’m correct, Pierce is the closest to Ratner. If I’m wrong, someone please correct me.

clubar-- Pierce is probably a better option if you want to be literally across the street from Ratner and from frats. Crossing the midway is not a big deal, especially considering that BJ/ South Campus are closer to some of the main buildings than Pierce is, but Pierce is closer to more activity, and very social.

highlander-- Pierce is a smidge closer to Ratner than Max.

Is max a fun social dorm? I was assuming it would be.

Max and pierce are equal distances from ratner classes parties for me. I don’t really care about the difference that much. I do kindof want a newer dorm though so I was leaning max…

Max has lounges, bigger rooms, and a dining hall right?

Yes, Max has lounges, although probably the best thing about Pierce is its lounges. The rooms are undeniably bigger in Max, and Bartlett is just a few feet away (although Pierce has a dining hall on the first floor). Max is a bit closer to Ratner than Pierce, at least if you’re talking about Central or West, but they’re both virtually the same distance.

Ok so, I think I’m coming to the University of Chicago…like 98% sure, and I’m still trying to figure out which dorm would fit me best. I prospied in Snell-Hitchcock which just wasn’t really my thing (sorry if anyone here lives there!). I want a more social dorm which made me lean towards Max or South Campus (with Pierce as probably my third choice). However, after reading way too many discussion boards on the topic, I’ve begun to worry that the party scenes at those two are a little bit more than I want. Can anyone tell me exactly how prevelent/in your face parties are at those two dorms? Do they both have a good variety of personalities (so maybe some people who go the frats and party most weekends but also other more like me who, while they will definitely occaisonally party, are just generally a little more lowkey)? Also, how tight-knit are those dorms/houses?

Considering what I’m looking for, are Max and South Campus my best bets or should I be thinking about other dorms? Despite this school’s no fun rep (which, at this point, I have to believe is not true), I really want to learn a lot and have a good time in college, and I want a dorm that will facilitate that.

Just a bump to move this thread up so that someone will help me! My question is conviently located directly above!

Although I’m just an admitted student as well, I agree completely with your dorm choices (I also listed these three as my own). From what I’ve heard on CC, Facebook, etc, these dorms offer a more typical college experience and really facilitate meeting different kinds of people.

I think that you shouldn’t worry too much about an excesive party scene. The first year is really important for making friends and choosing a circle (not that you can’t meet new people later on) and therefore its smart to be close to some of the action. Later on, if you do decide that your dorm is too much, you could always transfer to quieter dorm. Personally, thats what I would do. As for numbering your choices, I think that is a pretty casual issue since what I’ve heard on these threads is that people end up generally happy regardless of where they end up.

I believe a current student would be more qualified to answer some of your other questions.

About how social and/or quiet is BJ?

these were my choisese and the housing application was submitted on the 21st of April:

Snell-Hitchcock

Max

B-J

Although S-H is my favorite dorm, I know I submitted my deposit and housing app way too late to be considered for my first choice, but to I have a chance to get into Max?

Max is HUUUUGE (huge huge huge), and now has a “buddy” in that the New Dorm will have all the newness and perceived sociability that once drew people to it, so yes, I’d say you have a very good chance of getting in to Max.

You will not get SH. Sorry to say it, but you wouldn’t get it unless you had submitted pre-March 2nd. It’s wasting a slot. Just move Max up to first, and then you can be sure.

I know that the campus has a gym but can i use something like the iron gym in the dorm?

ALso thank you all for the comments on this thread. It really helped me choose my housing decisions.

If i confirmed around Apr. 9th, how good of a chance do I have for BJ first choice and Breck 2nd (broadview 3rd)?

I kinda have the same question as Shempi.
I committed April 1st with Max as my first, South Campus as second and Pierce as third. What’s the likelihood that I’ll get Max?

Anyone know anything about transfer housing?
