The Desi Thread

I like money too, as in buying/selling stocks, and I’m good at it. I like making thing, but not necessarily making it myself. I feel like if I became something like a hedge fund manager, I could use some of my money to start up a little company that makes ground breaking developments (like Google X or Xerox Parc). I would be able to do what I love, make things I love (funding it atleast), and be rich. =D…thoughts?

^Cool!! You buy stocks? Do you research or is it random? I remember and episode in True Jackson VP where Lulu buys a stock because she likes the name, and she makes tons of money, but it’s a show so it most likely impossible to buy stock that way and make money!!!

Well, my dad didn’t give me any money to, but he gave my brother 1k. So at the same time, I kept a chart, as in if he had given me it and I kept investiving it where would I be at and how would we compare. It started Feb. 1, he is at 1.1k (he lost a bit at the beginning), and I am at around 2.5k…

Lol scared!

I’m indian but my parents actually want me to be something random but I want to be a cardio-surgeon or a computer engineer (Because my dad said that his computer engineering degree is way cooler than a lame computer science degree. The fact that it is from IIT helps though XD!)

imscared6 Yeah old well invested in the stock market too, about $5,000 in profits since 2009. And as far as your plan, I just have to say that becoming a hedge fund manager is HARD work and you have work your way up. Don’t expect to become one easily, you’d be at least 45 or more by that time. But I like your attitude and as long as you can beat out all those Harvard guys, your mind is in the right place!

Not old I meant I’m** stupid autocorrect

If you are pakistani, do you put “other” or asian in the demographics section?

Unfortunately Asian. I’m a Punjabi Paki, but I have a little Iranian in me too, so when college apps roll around, I’m putting “Middle Eastern/Caucasian”. :)

Idk if adcoms will get mad because my last name sounds kinda pakistani, but not really…

I’m Indian, and I obviously put “Asian”, but in 1923, an Indian man was denied the right to vote, so he said that he should be called caucasian because Aryans were supposed to come from the caucasian race. The Supreme Court said yes, so he was allowed to vote as a caucasian. Of course, nowadays all of the Indians are supposed to put Asian because that’s where we’re from.

So where’s everyone applying to college and what major? (or if you’re already in college, where?)

My name kinda gives it away…
My family is from all over the place, but is concentrated in Mumbai and Karachi

To qtpiginger: I don’t think adcoms will dislike it, if anything they’d be really happy to have something sounding diverse and exotic. Take my name, pure arabic first and last name. Because I live in the Midwest AKA melanin hell it usually (unfortunately) becomes a point of conversation. When looking around at colleges though, it would pay to judge the student body’s attitude toward eastern ethnicities. I don’t know if that’s an issue in New York, but it has definitely factored into my decision.

Anywho, I think I’m going to do a PoliSci or a Music Major (either Perf or Perf with Education certification)
Applying to:
Carleton
St. Olaf
University of Wisconsin - Madison
University of Chicago

I live in Wisconsin and I can assure you that UW-Madison is an AMAZING university, and has a beautiful campus.

I’m Pakistani, and I actually want to be a doctor, but whenever I tell anyone else this, they always think I’m one of those sheeple and blindly doing whatever my parents want me to. That really ticks me off. Sure, my parents are proud of my decision, but if I wanted to be a, say, journalist or lawyer, I’m sure they would’ve been just as proud. And my username could probably tell you which med school I’m aiming for…

I’m Indian and my parents don’t tell me what to be. They tell me that I can choose whichever profession I want because it’s my own decision but to be careful because it will affect the rest of my life. I do have some friends whose parents tell them to be doctors or something related to engineering.

Me? Well first I was set on Computer Science because the possibility for innovation. It’s literally limitless what you can do with a few programming languages and a bit of creativity. It doesn’t even have to be complicated either; look at instagram. An extremely simple idea: sharing photos online, and yet, it was worth 1 BILLION DOLLARS when it was sold to facebook. Or even more simple: the million dollar homepage (google it; it’s an absolutely ingenious, but extremely basic idea).

But now, I’ve looked up some related fields, and I’ve heard about this new Computational Finance (Financial Engineering) offering, which looks awesome. It combines the two things I love: Finance and Computer Science (with some math). So I’m in a dilemma lol.

As for stocks…I used my savings to buy a few Apple stocks back when they were ~$200. You can probably guess how that went: I made $4000 :D. Absolutely lucky guess though.

logicx24 what college do you go to? (or plan on going to)

Im pakistani and i know tht my parents feel tht i wont make it as a dentist as i am not tht smart. But i always wondered if they cared about how people saw me or how people saw them based on how i turn out

@adkinedi Lol sorry for the late reply. I’ve been super busy lately, and haven’t been able to keep up with all my threads. As for where’d I’d like to go to college (I’m a senior), I’d say MIT first choice (obviously lol), CMU second, Cornell third, Columbia fourth. Beyond that, Idk lol.

I can not the-believe that I’m so much the-late to the get-together.
Shame, shame. Isssh.

Hello, fellow brownies. <3

@mohobo

Really digging this reply. My parents are way less conventional than the normal Indian parents are. I go over to my Desi friends’ houses all the time and it’s schoolwork craziness all the time. It’s not to say that I’m a slacker, because it’s kind of impossible for me to slack. Hard work: It’s in my blood.

My mom and dad both did some form of engineering in college. My dad ranked #1 on his Board Exams and went to one of the best universities in Bharat. My mom did software-something-or-other-engineering but hated it and regrets wasting her time. She did investing for a long time.

I do as well as I can. I’m naturally a writing-inclined person and have only recently shied away from that side. Math and science excites me! Alas, not big into being a pseudo-intellectual nowadays. My dad’s a math whiz kid guy who gets excited about anything even remotely STEM so I ask him for help whenever necessary.

My mom is the emotional one who just wants me to love what I learn, and for me to not end up like her: A vengeful engineer.
