“So, you know those stereotype brown people videos on youtube? Who watches AKakaAmazing’s vids? they’re the best!”

AKAKAAMAZING is amazing. Actually funniest guy. Canada <3

Desi Thread! South Indian here. Parents want me to be a doctor LOL (but they really don’t care if it’s a Ivy League university or not [that’s my dream, aha])

indian- part italian too. pretty good combo actualy
South indian tamil.
havent met another tamil high schooler ever in america.
going into soph yr. future career- engineering. My parents dont care much. i care more actually. attend a school with about 10 patels per grade -_-. so many gujaratis… some punjabis. barely any southerners

Don’t even talk to me about the MCAT. My parents think I’ll do horrible on it and therefore want me to do UMKC’s 6 year med program. That is the last thing I’d ever want to do. Naturally they have a huge problem with that and always tell me about so and so’s kid who goes there and how so and so graduated from there -_-

You don’t have to worry about the MCAT with that program since you’re already in med school from the start. But I can’t imagine non-stop school for 6 years.

I’m not techincally a desi (My mom is middle eastern and my dad is white.) But my mom’s family was in india for 3 generations and she lived there till she was 16. Lets get started on my mom’s absurdities:

Not allowed to date till college (Mostly because she doesnt think the people in our town are “worthy” lol)

Have to get straight A’s- I don’t really mind, because I want straight A’s. But seriously if I get a B, which I got in middle school, she shouldnt freak out.

Have to be a lawyer, doctor, engineer, or businessman- Luckily I want to be a lawyer.

Anything besides HYPS or Oxbridge (her family is a Yale or Oxbridge family) is a bad school.- I mentioned two days ago that I might want to go to berkeley. She went nuts lol. “I don’t work hard for you to go to Berkeley.” “That’s a stoner college.” “Just because a lot of your senior friends are going there doesnt mean you have to.”

Expects me to never drink or have premarital sex- Nuff said

Ties into last one: Wants me to follow her religion- She’s a moderate muslim (wears american clothes/no hijab and only prays a few times a week.) My dad is christian by faith (has strong conversative ideals/but doesnt go to church.) Let’s just say islam is not the religion for me. (not neccessarily saying christianity is, but it’s more likely something i’d adopt as belief.)

Wow, this thread is really off topic. But i’m glad to read some of my other CC’ers with their crazy parents.
My parents are pretty liberal, their standards are to “help me with whatever” meaning maintain at least a 3.2 average, I can date whomever, I can be out till whenever. Only catch is that I have to have at least some sort of extra curricular. (Which is no problem, I’ve been working since the age of 15 and now work for a radio station getting paid handsomely.)
-But they do want me to always call in to tell them where I am, which gets kind of tedious.

I can see my story in all of yours’ so I’ll just summarize.

My parents kind of gave up on me after I made a few B’s in high school. Oddly in enough, those were all in my pre-ap classes, not in any one of my 16 AP classes.
I don’t have a perfect gpa, i’m not the class valedictorian, and I suck at biology. Just biology, not chem or physics, just biology.
And frankly, I’m okay with that. I love economics and finance and hoping to major in econometrics in college, and looking at upenn, northwestern, umich, and uchicago, and I might have a shot.

I’m sorry. This formula of getting an md and then making money later just isn’t my style.

@imscared6 Not forced…rather, slightly nudged lol… except engineers and doctors are usually well paying, while not exceptionally lucrative, they are stable jobs and make for a good future. This is probably why Desi parents want us to follow in one of those paths. If I had to say though, I’m by choice as well.

Whao this is an overwhelming amount of future doctors and engineers! Anyone in the minority here like me? I’m majoring in finance in hopes of becoming an investment banker. Anyone whose parents actually let them choose other careers?
