Hey,
Im writing the test from outside the USA and we use the European scale for pencils here. I googled and some sources say the number 2 pencil is equivalent to the HB on the European scale and some say its equivalent to the 2B. So, now the million dollar question! What do I take to the exam? 2B or HB? I cant afford to risk my scoring! Im sure nobody here can! Someone please solve this for me!

Either should be fine. Those scales are how dark the pencil is. Don’t make your bubbles too dark that it blacks out everything or too light that it barely marks it. I’ve never seen a problem with the pencils. Also, here in the us at testing centers, some have extra pencils just do that you’re sure you’re using the right one

The numbers used in the US, and the letter system both refer to the hardness of the “lead” in the pencil. Number 3 and 4 pencils are harder, and the marks are more difficult for mechanical readers to read. Number 1 pencils are softer, and more likely to smudge. Thus number 2 pencils are the best to use.

4 pencils are about equivalent to 2H in hardness

3 = H

2-1/2 = F

2 = HB

1 = B

We don’t have a numbering system for the other levels of hardness (9H - 9B). Harder lead usually appears lighter and crisper. Blacker leads (up to 9B) are softer, and leave more lead on the paper.

Your best best is HB, but B should be fine. 2B will work, but it is a softer lead, and may be more prone to smudging.

Thank you so much. I’ll carry both 2B and HB and the center will have extra. I’ve read that in a lot of places so its all cool. Good luck for your SAT!!

HB is useless for the circles
